How do you install a patch

Sorry, I'm a bit new.
I found a bunch of patches for the game that look neat, but I can't figure out how to actually install them.
Please help.

Patch in terms of crawl means a code patch, not an executable patch. To use one, you'd need to download the code base, set it up to compile, then apply the patch and compile the game.
