white boxes for sprites

All the characters and items that appear on the tiles show up as white square blocks.
It's an old computer, 1.5ghz single core, 512 ram, and ati rage 128 ultra (16mb, what a monster). If its a simple fix thats great but i'm not to upset if its an unknown issue. All drivers up to date.

It's odd that the corpse near the bottom and the ring to the right appear correctly. Do they appear correctly when they're in view?

Re: white boxes for sprites

Yes they look fine but as soon as I mouse over them, the white box comes up and blocks the entire cursor. Also the white boxes appear when I mouse over wall tiles and any items.

EDIT: Is directX required for this game???

also ive got to say I just started playing roguelike games and I absolutely love this game. so addicting

Re: white boxes for sprites

Rapied saw this on Mantis, but I wanted to make sure that some updates made it to the forum:

Some people with this problem fixed it by changing their display color depth from 16 bit to 32 bit.

Re: white boxes for sprites

I have the same broken visuals as OP with current versions, both Stable and Dev builds. I'm on Windows 7. Previously played without issue on this system when it ran XP on my previous hard drive.

The game is also taking around a second to process every command and using nearly 50% of my CPU.

EDIT: Just tried 0.10.4, the visual bugs are gone, but the game is still so slow to respond to commands as to be unplayable. I restate that I had no problem playing until switching to Windows 7 64-bit from Windows XP.

Re: white boxes for sprites

Isn't that just a batch file? I don't think that's the cause of your graphics issue.

Re: white boxes for sprites

Whatever the original cause of this was, it seems to be fixed for me in the most recent build, 0.12-a0-2244-g0ff3a51. No more white boxes, no more slow response to commands. Kudos to whoever fixed that.

Re: white boxes for sprites

Hi! :)
I hate to dig up old posts, but i can't find a solution to this problem
It's exactly as rickroy was saying but i'm using vista...

Vista Business SP2
laptop HP EliteBook 8530p
Intel Duo CPU 2.40GHz
32-bit OS

and using the stone_soup-tiles-0.12

I'm just assuming now that it's a problem with vista
but i have no idea really

Thanks for any help :D

Re: white boxes for sprites

This is a known bug: https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=7237

It can sometimes be fixed by updating drivers, Windows, etc. But some graphics cards without enough texture memory will still have this problem, if my diagnosis is correct. There might be a possible solution if we split the spritesheets up into smaller files.
