New Ubuntu terminal unusable?

Just did a clean install of Ubuntu LTS 16.04, coming from LTS 14.04. While in the old version the default terminal worked just fine to play DCSS, in the new version DCSS is unplayable. Lots of stuff are apparently just not visible; map features like walls are not retained, in the ability screen only active skills are visible.

Anyone got a clue whats going on?

No, but even newer Ubuntus still install "xterm", which is still perfectly usable.
