No fonts in tiles version, Lubuntu

Why can't I see fonts in tiles version on Lubuntu? I've tried windowed, fullscreen, latest 18.1 version and ubuntu repo version 17.1. Also installed extra DejaVu ttf font pack in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ from Ubuntu repo and updated font cache with sudo fc-cache -f -v command. Purged and reinstalled between tries. Fonts are normally visible in terminal version. Should I put some other font in dat/tiles/ folder? If so, what would be the exact commands that should be added in init.txt? New computer with Mint 17.3 has fonts in tiles version. Please help Linux newbie out.
