Autoinscribing chunks

I've put "autoinscribe = inedible.*chunk:@w1" (also for poisonous, mutagenic and decay inducing chunks) in my init, for easier management of sublimation of blood, while at the same time avoiding sublimation of chunks I'd rather eat.
Now, this works fine as long as the chunk matches the condition at the time I pick it up, but chunks that rot in my inventory don't get inscribed with {@w1}. Is this how it works, and is there anything I can do about it?
