Before we could play via SSH / telnet.. but now we can play webtiles!

On your Android device, download Opera Mobile (not mini), then in the URL enter "opera:config" go to User Preferences and enable Websockets.

Ideally you will need a large screen and a keyboard (spectating is fine though).. I'd love to see someone try this on an Android based tablet (or an ipad?). For a few more pics see http://regnix.imgur.com/all/

I've just tried it. CnM Touchpad II, Froyo with a USB keyboard. As per you, I can spectate fine, and login as myself on the lobby page. Playing on ze other hand...
I think we've got a snag with opera itself. It seems to not be passing keyboard input into webtiles, but trying to do something with them itself, in this case activating opera's soft-cursor when I try to press "l" to start a naga.

Naughty Opera, don't make me have to play over telnet!

Thanks for the feedback djnw. I've just got an Asus eee pad transfomer (with keyboard dock). I just tried Opera Mobile again.. I can login to the lobby, but when I continue a game I have going, I'm unable to move. Like you said, it seems that Opera isn't sending the keyboard commands. and when I use the arrow keys, it seems to move the on-screen cursor from one tile to the next.

+1 for Android on tablet.
I'll try with the web version, but wishing for a port!

Webtiles is amazing. It's definately opening up a great game to a whole new audience. I have and androi tablet (toshiba thrive). I have the hacker's keyboard running, but unable to send any lettered commands to the server. The directional arrows work though. Firefox has websockets loaded by default.

indeed. Webtiles is probably the best way to bring crawl to android and other mobile OS. We just need to add mouse (touch) support to it.

Yes. Mouse support is actually my big goal for 0.11. The control scheme of the current tiles version isn't very well suited for touch input though, since it often requires right clicks and various modifier keys. I'm thinking about adding an alternative, more experimental interface (in addition to the one of local tiles), which should be easier to use with a touch screen. (To be honest, I don't particularly like the mouse interface of local tiles anyway. I think Webtiles will be a good place for some experiments.)

Running Webtiles with the android tablet in portrait mode works perfectly. I just haven't figured out why webtiles quits responding to the onscreen keyboard when logged into the game. The onscreen keyboard directional arrows work, but none of the other keys respond.

I still prefer the near-perfect* keyboard support of ssh with ConnectBot.

The tiles are really nice though. I might have to try this sometime. Definitely great if it can get more people playing. Much easier to show new people the tile version and it's probably better than ssh for all the devices without hardware keyboards too.

(*tab doesn't work)

Embarrassingly enough, the keyboard on the screen was hiding the responses to my input.

I'm so jealous you can get it to work; tried every browser & bluetooth keyboard combo on iPad and nothing. Same problem of not getting webtiles to recognize the keyboard input. I'm not a real programmer so I have no idea how to go about fixing it but tablet crawl sounds fantastic.

Omg+1 for iPad dungeon crawl. How awesome would it be to be able to crawl from anywhere!

The IPad has websockets so it shouldn't be tough to just set it up so that it accepts the iPad keyboard, right? Right?

Crawl tiles on the iPad makes me happy just thinking about. Would definitely donate/pony up for that.

Input works for me with the current Chrome Beta and "Hacker's Keyboard", a softkeyboard from the market. I'm running a Nexus S with a custom ICS rom.

"Hacker's Keyboard" offers a notification symbol to bring up the keyboard whenever, even if there's no indication for the OS to bring up the keyboard. The usual "hold menu" doesn't work for some reason.

So, yeah, a softkeyboard with a means to be brought up whenever and Chrome Beta should be all, I don't think "Hacker's Keyboard" is specifically needed.

I'm not the developer of "Hacker's Keyboard". The name is horrible. I'm glad it works though. :)

Edit: the rendering in Chrome isn't perfect though. The fontsize doesn't scale well, which screws up a few screens, the Skills menu is the worst I saw up to now.

im trying webtiles on my phone, and while chrome and chrome beta do not work for me, Firefox does. I am also using hackers keyboard. However when ever i try a command that brings up a text window, like find, it closes the keyboard and nothing i can seem to do will let me fill the text. Surprisingly find does work in chrome, but since it doesn't seem to read normal letters i cannot auto travel to the item.
