Changing the player character glyph

Hey I've seen a few screen shots of people and some of them have their characters represented by they're species glyph (Orges are Os, Vampires are V's, demigod are golden @'s)! I think thats pretty awesome - how do I do about doing that?

I see an option in my init.txt file that says 'show player species'... i have it set to true but nothing happens.

Any help?

This may be a dumb question, but did you uncomment it (removed hash symbol)?
