Change Giant Eyeballs to Mesmerise

Floating eyes appear very early in the game and have a paralysis attack which does not require line of sight. This is a pretty brutal effect for a dice-roll in the early game where they are common. I think it would be more fair, interesting, and make more sense thematically to give them the mesmerize effect on their gaze, and if necessary add a different Paralysing eye who is distinct and more obviously paralytic.

That would 1. be redundant with the existing mesmerizing monsters, 2. never be any sort of threat.

Also, the attack does require line of sight, just not line of fire.

Since it works like smite I thought it don't need line of sight at all? Also it does seem strange when the monster description says it having a 'mesmerizing' glance.

Amusingly eyeballs are almost never actually dangerous early on with even a little caution, but become exceptionally dangerous later. They are a very good monster as is, I feel.

You're right, the effect requires line of sight but not line of fire.

Giant eyeballs are not independently a threat anyway, but mesmerise forces you to make a decision instead of a saving throw when one peeks around a corner while you are fighting yaks or whatever.

They're slow. You can walk away.

Re: Change Giant Eyeballs to Mesmerise

Giant eyeballs exist to be summoned by pan lords and dissolution, and as a way to do terrible things to otherwise omniresistant characters. Giant eyeballs are perfect at this late game roll already, the fact that they show up in the early game at all is almost irrelevant. They're not very scary at the time unless you get very unlucky with an eye spawning near something much scarier.

Re-reading the original post, it seems the answer to op's problem with eyeballs being brutal to early characters would be just removing giant eyeballs from the early dungeon and having them existing as noting but a summon.

Someone suggested once that Giant Eyeballs should flee after successfully paralyzing a player -- I still think they should do this.

Giants eyeballs early are good, at least you learn their effect where they're the least dangerous (or where your character loose doesn't hurt much).

It's a good way to teach.

If anything then they really should get their shit out of slime ziggurat floors, since the last thing you need while fighting an army of high-tier slimes is a little shit paralyzing you while you can't kill it because it's behind the slime army.

Re: Change Giant Eyeballs to Mesmerise

I think that instead of paralyzing the player, Giant Eyeballs should give extra energy to monsters, so they get extra actions. This would A) Give the tools to solve the "scaling problem" of them being lethal with a monster pack but popcorn with only one or two monsters around. B) Make their abilities "feel" less unfair.

Re: Change Giant Eyeballs to Mesmerise

Only once have I been in the middle of a dangerous fight when an eyeball popped out and paralyzed me, leading to YAD. That's arguably my fault anyways.
Every other time, they paralyze you, then you walk up and OHK them.
