[OT stuff from] Name of the Crusader background

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

I like the idea of that as a new spell - although the type of toad should reflect the level of the transformed monster. Also toads being pretty fast it might not always be a great idea! Obviously it's just a specialised version of polymorph but it has a nice theme and is a bit more predictable.

danr wrote:I do think the Crusader name needs to go - it's a bad "brand" and I don't see what the class in the game has to do with "crusading". Crusader would be appropriate for a religious warrior, not for a magic user. Crusaders would burn those accused of using magic if anything.

I think it would be great reworked as a Shining One follower with no magic.

Re: Name of the Crusader background

switch it to TSO, strip it of its magic, call it a paladin, and remove it
(the joke is that paladins were followers of tso with no magic and now they are gone)

Paladins were removed with very little input from players. I would not at all mind getting them back (though they need more distinction now that all fighters get long blades - better starting armour, perhaps?)

Re: Name of the Crusader background

distinguishing a religious class by things that aren't its religion is bad design.
but this thread is about renaming crusaders, no?

I don't necessarily agree. It was pointed out that TSO gives mostly disadvantages in the early game, so giving them an advantage to make up for it (you can start with pretty good armour, but then you'll have to follow TSO's conducts) works OK IMO.

The thread is about crusader. If you want to discuss paladin, open another one.
<+Grunt> You dereference an invalid pointer! Ouch! That really hurt! The game dies...

You can also safely abandon TSO on turn 1 without fear of retribution unless you intend to take up an evil god.

Re: [OT stuff from] Name of the Crusader background

It sounds like the consensus among commenters is that crusader is not a great name. But I don't sense much enthusiasm for any alternatives.

Mystic warrior sounds more appropriate than Crusader, given the magic fixation of the class IMO.
