High level charm spells

High level charm spells

I was reading the discussion about making charm spells permanent and realized that making it a game mechanic would break enchanters, having free: boots of speed, boots of levitation, amulet of control flight... by the mid game would make the game a joke.

on the other hand a 9th level charms spell with these effects would be in line with the other level 9 spells.

Permanency level 9 charms

When casting the spell a list of all the spells a player can make permanent pops up, the player chooses one of them and that spells duration is increased to permanency. Casting the spell has a hefty price as each casting even if the spell fails costs the caster 1 mp permanently(or maybe yellow magic contamination?).

In the Brainstorm wiki, Duration-based spells would use max MP temporarily. So if you had all the buffs possible running at once, you would have no MP for casting other spells. See Duration-based spells
Human kind cannot bear very much reality.

1) the charms wouldn't be permanent; they would deplete maximum mp and possibly have other effects

2) spells with permanent effects clash with crawl's current design, as it's possible to remove heavy armour, put on +int and wizardry, and quaff brilliance (though this is less bad since it's actual resource drain) for artificially raising success rates
(this means that you can get a nice permanent effect without deserving it and then go back to not deserving it)

I think technically in this case, that's not an issue. Since most popular charms tend to be fairly low level. If you can succeed at casting a level 9 spell even with brilliance or whatever, you probably had enough skill to cast the low level charms at least.

with ashenzari you can reskill some stuff to charms then reskill away after casting the big spell

What about Level 9 charms that combine some of the lower levels spells; call it "Protection" and it gives you Deflect Missiles, Swiftness/Haste, +AC. Then maybe one called Control (Charms/Transloc) that gave CTele, Phase Shift, Flight. Obviously these effects wouldn't stack with the base ones. This gives you an easy way to manage having a whole bunch of effects on at once.
