0.12: New item: Pie

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

0.12: New item: Pie

First off, I get the reference: In early versions of Nethack, the Keystone Kops would throw pies and blind you. Now we have KIller Klowns throwing pies and blinding you. Bear in mind that the Killer Klowns and pies were taken out of later versions of Nethack as being silly and anachronistic.

Two things about Crawl's implementation of pies

1) I hope Crawl doesn't start adding anachronistic, goofy stuff. I've seen some good games go in the wrong direction when devs start adding unnecessary clutter. Often this occurs because devs want to see their ideas implemented regardless of whether it actually improves the game play.

2) The telepathy intrinsic in Nethack made it almost irrelevant if you got blinded in the late game. Sometimes it was even beneficial. That is not the case in Crawl, and being randomly blinded in Zot by a cream pie doesn't seem to add much to game play.

Re: 0.12: New item: Pie

Anachronism

A chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of person(s), events, objects, or customs from different periods of time.

Pie

A baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. The first pies appeared around 9500 BC, in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age, when the use of stone tools shaped by polishing or grinding became common, the domestication of plants and animals, the establishment of permanent villages, and the practice of crafts such as pottery and weaving.

I think you seriously underestimate the amount of work and thinking that goes into the design process.
C'mon! Pies! In your face Sigmund! That's hilarious!!!
<+Grunt> You dereference an invalid pointer! Ouch! That really hurt! The game dies...

Re: 0.12: New item: Pie

I laughed my ass off when I found my first pizza. I thought it was something special since I had probably splatted 50x characters before I even saw one. More troubling is the inexplicable supply of fresh fruit laying about.

There are some silly or anachronistic things in crawl. They are rare enough to be an overall benefit though.

I approve of Killer Klowns getting the pie. They were useless as threats before, now they actually demand some attention.

The subtractor snake throws a WeightWatchers(TM) Frozen Dinner.
The WeightWatchers(TM) Frozen Dinner hits you!
Your body is rapidly deteriorating.
Your plate armour falls away!
The kobold whistles appreciatively.
