Species Brainstorm: Slug Heroes

Slug Heroes:

- Slow because slow species are cool
- Severe item restrictions ala Felid, but with mechanics that are fun instead of soul crushing
- Replace felids with slug heroes as the race with severe item restrictions
- Eating is the theme. Slug Heroes should eat things to get stronger, like Gastronok eating a wizard and becoming a wizard slug.
- Slime as an ability which makes the slug move faster and leaves a temporary trail of slime behind them that interacts with enemies in some way. Perhaps on occasion they lose a turn when trying to move.

Possible eating mechanics:

- Slug heroes have on average poor aptitudes but when they eat a corpse they gain an aptitude bonus towards certain sets of skills. Eating magic users would boost their aptitudes in magic, tough creatures would boost fighting, nimble creatures would boost dodging, etc.

- Slug heroes can ingest items/corpses and absorb their properties over time. The digestion process is governed by xp gain. More powerful items require longer to digest. Slug heroes have facets that are gained by ingesting items/corpses that are overwritten if they eat something that provides the same facet. For example, CPA could take a huge amount of xp to digest, but would give a slug hero a high amount of innate AC. Facets should be balanced on opportunity cost with outright penalties avoided (something like wild magic is ambiguous enough to be a good possible facet).

- Slug heroes cannot read. They learn spells upon eating spell books or magic users. Upon ingestion they can learn what the spell book contained or the magic user knew for a temporary amount of time ala Vehumet.

- Slug heroes still cannot read. They cannot use scrolls but can eat them to gain a single use of a scroll as an ability. They can only hold one scroll effect at a time, or some similar limitation.

- Slug heroes cannot wield weapons, but they can eat weapons to gain an innate unarmed attack. Short blades could give them fangs while polearms could make them bristle with spikes. Possibly these attacks could be enhanced through weapon skill but have their delay and base damage depend on UC.

P.S. Slug hero is obviously the best species name ever

Nagas are slow. Two slow creatures in 1 too many, and Nagas actually are fun.

But felids are fun.

Balanced? Hah! Seems grindy to me!

This changes nothing really, just makes scrolls less convenient.

What about top tier books; it's unlikely to find many of those

I think this idea is pretty unbalanced and grindy. It seems like it would add unneccesary tedium to otherwise simple mechanics.

Re: Species Brainstorm: Slug Heroes

This sounds like it could be great, if it were done right.

Would eating things give permanently the highest bonus of the things you have eaten (eg, you get some portion of the AC of the highest AC armor you have ever eaten) or temporary bonuses from all things, so you rove around like a jelly to keep your bonuses up?

Also it could be fun to give them very fast metabolism but nutrition from everything they eat.

Maybe they could always leave a few squares of slug trail, that way they could be a slow species but still able to escape from things? Or maybe they could have a vampire type mechanic where they speed up to normal speed if they don't have and aren't digesting any bonus, so weak sluggies could survive long enough to find something?

IMHO it would be Jelly, not Slug.

For that particular idea, the intent is that you receive the benefit of the last thing you ate that affects that facet. There would have to be differentiation between the bonuses granted by armour types if eating armour were a thing. Perhaps there could be a severe dex penalty for a heavy armour facet as opposed to a lighter armour. Eating a robe would remove such a facet. Armour egos could be absorbed as well. The delay between eating an object and taking on its properties would make switching properties nontrivial.

I do not like the idea of eating things constantly in order to survive because I do not like Nemelex or anything that makes me pay extra attention to floor trash.
