grunt_profane_halls

To whoever designed the main dungeon Level 24 with the waves of draconians, bone dragons, tormentors and other mobs, thanks. If I ever finish this level, I'm going to exit the dungeon feeling like I've won the game because this is worse than any level of Zot.

Sounds like grunt_profane_halls, but it's hard to be sure.

Went from level 25 to level 27. Also lost half my arrows, unfortunately...

That's grunt_profane_halls, so Grunt is the one to thank. :)

Seems pretty cool. Also a bit mean. Double bands of 0s and 9s? Ouch!

Oh man, I recently had the "Pleasure" of encountering that hell hole

On the one hand, I burned through half of my consumables in my ill-advised attempt to kill all the dudes. On the other hand, It was 100% worth breaking up the monotony of the standard layout dungeon experience.

Re: Level 24

I LOVE special dungeon maps like these! Sure a lot of them are hard as hell, but exactly as wizzzargh put it, it does break up the monotony of the last few dungeon levels in the end game. One of Crawl's "fun little distractions" in other words. :)

I'd be the same, too, spending a few thousand turns down here doing a complete and utter sweep. I've never gotten the Profane Halls, but some of the tougher ones I have gotten have yielded Potions of Experience, which are ALWAYS a wonderful and glorious treat. :) :)

Re: Level 24

I first got this map on D:27 and it was very fun and challenging to clear. Also really cool with the entrance to Zot in the center and all that. I was disappointed when I got it on not D:27 though.

Re: Level 24

I just got this map again, this time on Level 26. Kinda glad that it isn't fixed to just one level, but I can see how getting it at level 27 would be a little different with that Zot entrance in the middle.

I do believe that clearing it this time will be quite a bit different with my OpFE than it was with my CeAM.

Its range is 19-27. Also, I edited the thread title.

Got this map and another couple of (I think) newish ones in a recent game, and they were great fun! Really broke up the tedium of the later D levels all being pretty much the same.

Whatever happened to the late Dungeon level that was a big plane of lava with hell knights and little stone forts all over the place? I don't even remember what version it was, but I only saw it once, maybe in 2010. It was fun.

Re: grunt_profane_halls

That's the Sea of Fire; it's still in. It's probably my favorite encompass map simply on account of how parts of it have to be entered from below, which makes the dungeon feel a lot more 3D.

Re: grunt_profane_halls

after playing several games with grunt profane halls, i came to conclusion that it is an excellent map design (maybe not as good as tomb, but surely better than v8 and all other encompass vaults), but too strong for normal dungeon, even for D27.

how about making it a separate branch? my idea is to replace the guaranteed portals to pan and abyss at D24 and D25 with portals to profane halls, place pan and abyss portals there, and make non-guaranteed pan and abyss portals less common.

that way, new players that struggle to get their first 3 rune win (and could actually win in pre-profane halls crawl) won't be ruthlessly murdered, and those with more experience and desire for extended content will have to fight their way through this excellent but brutal map.

p.s. this will be very similar to hell vestibule, but i don't think it's bad.

Re: grunt_profane_halls

If I recall correctly, last time I had this not on D:27, I just skipped it. It's absolutely brutal on D:27 though, I agree.
