God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

A modest proposal:

God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory instead of the ground.

In the case where you have 0 slots or not enough strength to carry the item without increasing your level of burden, then place on ground as usual.

Re: God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

Probably half the time with Trog and Okawaru, I never even pick the gift up. Thanks for the quietly farting scythe, but I'm already wielding a +6 Antimagic Executioner's Axe. The non-glowing animal skin is also probably not going to be super compelling.

Re: God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

1) It saves a turn
2) It makes more sense - the god is giving YOU an item, not chucking something at the ground near your feet.
3) It is less likely for the player to forget the item/miss the message in the middle of combat.

I assumed these were obvious :) It is true that later on a fair amount of god gifts are bad, but I think it's generally a good idea to check them, unless they are entirely the wrong item class.

It saves a turn unless you need to drop the item (as in njvack's eloquent example) and then it wastes a turn. There are also examples where having a new, potentially heavy, item appear in your inventory mid-combat could be quite detrimental.

Re: God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

Yeah -- your god would need to check if this would burden you based on unbuffed Str. Maybe you're Berserk or on Might or have your +3 Str randart temporarily equipped.

And the "sometimes your gift goes to inventory, sometimes it goes on the ground" thing sounds odd.

Add levitation/flight to that list.

Xom should continue to gift on the ground I think.
It also makes it so a orc warlord can't pick up that lovely flaming executioner's axe okawaru gifted you and use it to kill you.
What made you happy today?

Maybe Xom should actually give that flaming axe of deadly doom to the orc warlord. For fun.

If you're flying over lava/deep water, will your God drop your gift into it now? That would be vaguely amusing.

Hm, a brief test in wizmode with Trog and I seem to just not get any gifts at all when levitating over deep water.

Acquirement will go right into the drink though. I imagine that's a learning moment.

I don't particularly like this proposal, since I spend most of my time somewhere near the burdened limit - so half the stuff would go into my inventory, and half on the floor. That's worse than everything going on the floor.

Should there be a prompt when reading acquirement over deep water or lava? (Is there one already?)

Re: God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

Read which item? (? for menu, Esc to quit)
As you read the scroll of acquirement, it crumbles to dust.
This is a scroll of acquirement!
[a] Weapon [b] Armour [c] Jewellery [d] Book [e] Staff
[f] Wand [g] Miscellaneous [h] Food [i] Gold [j] Ammunition
What kind of item would you like to acquire? (\ to view known items)
Something appears at your feet!
You hear a splash.

No prompt.

I feel like:

  Code:
You hear a splash. You feel dumb.

might be appropriate. At least over lava.

Re: God gifts and acquirement items should go into inventory

Does Xom give you items when you're over deep water or lava? I think that would be a perfect thing for him to do.

Xom yells, "THINK FAST!"
A faintly glowing executioner's axe appears in front of you.
You hear a splash!
Xom squeals with glee, "Too slow!"

Better yet, make it a fully identified item that sounds quite good (and don't gift over deep water if the player has some way to swim). So, imagine it more like this...

Xom yells, "THINK FAST!"
The +10, +10 Executioner's Axe of Xom's Might (speed, rF++, +4 STR, rMut, Clarity) appears in front of you.
You hear a sizzling splash!
Xom squeals with glee, "Too slow!"

1) Get him to gift over deep water
2) Switch to Fedhas
3) Profit

Okay, that would be very tedious to try and exploit, but still doable. You'd also have to make it not work in the abyss, unless the new abyss generation doesn't work that way.
