Okawaru

Just started playing the modified Okawaru. Great change so far. Thanks devs. (Oka now gives a temp combat skills boost and a temp weapon speed boost).
Human kind cannot bear very much reality.

Haste is gone. It's replaced with double combat speed.

Soo first ability you gain is Heroism, which seems to increase your attack speed and I don't know what else.
And then aaaall the way over at 150 piety you can "speed up your combat" which is Finesse, which seems to make your attack speed even faster.

I don't know, it does sound interesting but I'll have to try this out in an actual game to see how it feels (I got this by just playing in wizard mode to check out the differences)

Heroism speeds up your attacks slightly by increasing all your nonmagic skills by 5. Finesse is like 0.7 haste, but only for melee and ranged attacks.

So that you don't use it for running away. Makes sense for god of battle.

Heroism at least on par with old Might in the damage output?

And this new Finesse also needs a lot of Invocation to work reliably or not?

The commit message for Finesse says:
Okawaru: Haste -> Finesse.
A double speed boost (rather than mere 1.5x), but affects only combat
(melee and ranged). This is a part of Okawaru's nerf.

The ability doesn't need as much victory dancing of Invocations.


The new Okawaru is looking pretty good. A low-level ogre of Okawaru could actually swing a giant spiked club without leaving themselves open, if their piety was in good standing. And while Heroism isn't on the same level as Might, it does raise your defenses.

I wonder if Finesse stacks with Haste, though. I hope not.

This buffs hybrids a bit, since you can gain +5 Armour and Shields for easier casting. But what I'm really curious to know, what's gonna happen to the what about the gifting? Perhaps some ability to make a limited number (3?) of artefacts from the players existing equipment? Allow scrolls of enchant foo to work on artefacts or perhaps go beyond their usual limits?

Buh, Okawaru's gifts don't need to be nerfed. If anything they need to be buffed.

Is there any method to Okawaru's gifts (aside from what is detailed in learndb and crawlwiki?)

He's been giving my MfCr really nice RandArt armour but lots of polearms of reaching, which are sadly useless. (I'm wielding a +1+2 trident at the moment.) Is there anything in Oka's gifting code that says "Give a slightly better weapon than the one wielded"?

(The real reason for the post is to invoke Irony to receive as a gift a +9 demon trident.)

Okawaru's weapon gifts look at your weapon skill, but there's still a chance to get a weapon of a purely random type. It does not preferentially give you weapons of better base type, weapons of higher enchantment, or randarts with helpful special qualities, but it does try again if it picks up something that's actively dangerous, like MUT or a penalty to a stat higher than your stat. You are guaranteed to be able to physically wield the gift, although it may well not be worth the effort. Some dangerous qualities, like the distortion brand, are considered positive even when they really are not.

Okawaru's armor gifts are roughly similar. You're mostly guaranteed to get something non-harmful, but you are not guaranteed to get something better than what you have.
