Rods as maces

Is there any reason to use a rod as a mace? There's no hidden enhancer staff thing with them or anything, is there?

If not, I think they might be "clumsy bash" weapons, as you probably don't want to use them for melee any more than a crossbow. (Yes, I know I can inscribe it for the attack warning.)

It can be handy to slam weak mobs with, why nerf rods anyways?

They're staves, so they use the stats of a "staff". 5/5/120.

Unless things have changed in trunk (this is from 0.10):

  Code:
Accuracy rating: +3    Damage rating: 5   Base attack delay: 130%

It falls into the 'Maces & Flails' category.

... so the same stats as a vanilla club, except that I think the enchantment only applies to its roddish-ness, not its damage or accuracy. It is a strong candidate for the worst melee weapon in the game.

I don't think its melee damage needs nerfing; it'd just be an interface niceness if it said "Really attack while wielding your rod of foo?" I just can't think of an occasion I'd ever want to melee with any rod, ever.

put this into your config, it's very useful:

autoinscribe = rod:!a

You think incorrectly.

Hell yeah, Minmay is correct. I was using a +9 rod of foo in melee at some point (with no weapon skill, even) and was kicking ass pretty much (well, not in end-game situations, but still).

Thanks! I stand most thoroughly corrected :)
