Interrupting the donning of armor

Is it actually possible to interrupt the action of donning armor? I was wondering, because my very promising Hill Orc Berserker just died to a komodo dragon because I was donning on a crystal armor. Seems like a good new implementable to me...

PS. Man I was pissed. My guy just stood there, with the komodo taking huge chunks of his health, and then: "You die..." Very sad :(

Everyone has this YASD. Do it once and you learn to just go up a floor before you change.

Same applies to eating rations.

Oh, I noticed. Died to it a couple times before I realized what was going on, so I'm game-spoiled and make sure I always take a stack of 2 rations and a stack of single-bite foods.

CAN'T STOP EATING TO DEFEND MY ASS FROM THAT OGRE! GOTTA KEEP EATING THIS STEAK! AM NAM NAM NAM NAM.

Re: Interrupting the donning of armor

Realistically the process of putting on heavy armor allows pretty much the same actions as being paralyzed. Something nearly as heavy and big as you is partially strapped to your body, with parts dangling around. Where crawl is unrealistic is in letting you continue putting on the armor while you're being hit by a monster. Gameplay would be better with interruptible armor wearing IMO. Just as unrealistic, but doesn't encourage tediously going somewhere very very safe before changing armors.

I went up to a cleared floor to put on armor and still YASDed because a Centaur Warrior that had spawned came around the corner the moment after I started and shot me to death before I finished.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Re: Interrupting the donning of armor

You should :
A : Use only robes
B : Go back to the temple every time
C : Lock yourself in a tiny room full of minions
D : Play Nethack -_-'

I'm OK with the fact of putting an armor being interruptible.
You see Sigmund, continue putting your Shiny Plate Armor, X turn left? Y/n

If you choose No, you finish putting as before, taking a risk with Sigmund but it's not annoying if it's only a bat.
If Yes, you save X turns, but are now without cloak and armor next to a threat. At least you can react.

Alternatively you can ask each turn if you want to continue putting armor, but I feel it is annoying while not being that useful (until someone see a bat, say Yes then see Sigmund...).

And of course, there's the inverse of this, when an ooze disrupts your butchery of that nearly-rotten yaktaur, when you're nearly starving

But the corpse can rot while you kill the ooze.

Granted, that's something like a 1 in 300 chance... but the "harmless monsters interrupting stuff I want to do" is the merely annoying inverse of "non-harmless monsters murdering you while putting on armour."

So, not really the same at all, and not on topic either. Sheesh!

If you are starving, it's because of strategic/tactic mistakes or really (I mean really) big bad luck (like abyss).
Not like changing your armor, an action that you normally have to do in order to proceed in the game.

From a flavor perspective, I can see being unable to defend oneself while putting on some armor. Some full suits of medieval plate required the assistance of servants.

Only HOPr can wear full plate.

Ah; I didn't realize that. I though it stopped and restarted my butchery process. Thanks!

Re: Interrupting the donning of armor

It might be nice if you could have a piece of armour 40% of the way on. When the baddie interrupts, you can take the time to put it all the way on, or take less time to take it all the way off. You can't do anything else while the armour is part-way on.

That would be the most realistic solution. I would prefer if it worked like butchering, though. Making people go upstairs to change their body armor is bad.

I think the way it works is just fine. There is nothing inherently bad about going up a floor to change armour. This isn't a game for 10 year olds who can't evaluate a simple risk situation and needs everything to happen on autopilot.

That's tournament armour, though, not something you'd use in battle.

Does that apply to shields, too?

Can ration eating be far behind?

CAN'T STOP EATING OR PUTTING ON MY SHIELD TO DEFEND MYSEL... AAAAH!

Yes it applies to shields. I doubt anything will change to food though. This change was to improve gameplay. Realism was not really a concern. Doing the same to food would remove any decision about what type of food to carry.
