DCSS 1.0 - It is time for major version

DCSS 1.0 - It is time for major version

DCSS still in version 0.x and this become more and more weird, especially with version 0.10. The game is already mature enought to have major version number instead of minor one. You can play and win it, there are lot of complete gameplay mechanics. It does not seems to be some sort of incomplete software.

Increasing minor version instead of going to full release of 1.0 is completely psycological factor. But 1.0 is not something to be afraid of. Even more. I can say, that DCSS already should be named like 9.1 and 10 instead of 0.9.1 and 0.10. Look at modern browsers and other popular software. Increasing major version is normal practice. Even Torvalds realized that Linux kernel should increase its major version. So follow these examples.

And at last 0.9 greater than 0.10 mathematically. And 0.10 is weird version number.

It has nothing to do with math. It's a bookkeeping thing.

0.10 comes after 0.9 for version numbers in, well, everything. Crack open a textbook and take a look at the section numbers... it's the same thing. It would be inconsistent if they did anything else and the 0.10 release is nothing special (I mean it's great but 0.9 and 0.8 and 0.7 where all great too).

Re: DCSS 1.0 - It is time for major version

Each software project's devs get to choose the version number scheme. Don't sweat it ;)

Traditionally, software version numbers aren't read like decimal numbers; the points are just separators. Yes, 0.10 is smaller than 0.9, but 0.9.1 isn't a number at all.

DCSS has been better quality than most commercial software since I started playing in 0.6; so I'm guessing the one-point-oh release isn't based on bug squashin'.

1.0 would imply the game is complete. Is there even a plan for 'completing' Crawl?

Haha tell this to Blizzard. what is the current version of WoW : 1.5 or something ?

one could argue that version 1.0 would be the first commercial release and subsequent releases would be patches.

How about DCSS charges a dollar for you to buy version 1.0 ? i'm just being facetious here.

Personally i think DCSS should release version 1.0 - it would be a great publicity opportunity for them.

Um, no it wouldn't. Generally speaking, numbers below 1.0 usually mean it's still in beta. Plenty of games continue on to version 1.1, 1.2, etc. or even go on to version 2, 3, etc.

If you never intend on changing that "0.", what's the point of even having it?

I think the general feeling when we discussed this on IRC a while ago was along the lines of "it doesn't really matter, let's just stick with our existing scheme for now instead of wasting time discussing numbers". (Obviously Crawl's version numbering scheme uses base 27, also).

Then, really, 0.10 should be 0.a ;)

1.0 will come after .27

I suppose you don't recall the days of AOL 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and so forth. Heck, even appending "Final" to the end of the version number doesn't say "We're done". Starcraft 1 did it with 1.12 I think, and now they're on 1.15 or something.

Re: DCSS 1.0 - It is time for major version

'Complete' was the wrong word - with commercial releases, I've always understood 1.0 means 'done enough that it's worth spending money on'. Crawl isn't commercial, and it seems to be in perpetual development, so I don't really understand what would be so significant about changing the number.

IIRC 1.12 was the final balance patch, everything after that was patching hacks.

p.s. Brood War is the best game ever

If they do that, then I'm moving to JADE. This is part of the reason why I quit ToME. Don't do it.
