Centaurs

Centaurs should have a lower depth.

It's not that uncommon to turn a corner and be smacked down to 20% of your HP in one shot by an early centaur. Then what do you do? They show up early enough that your survival basically depends on them missing a few shots and your luck in finding and identifying useful consumables or wands.

I'd say it would be more fair if they showed up, at earliest, on floor 3 or 4 instead of floor 2. This gives an extra floor to find consumables and wands to deal with them, as well as enough HP to survive an extra shot or so.

Re: Centaurs

It's very rare to see a centaur on floor 2 - floor 4 or 5 is usually when they start to show up in my experience. By then characters will have the consumables/abilities/etc to deal with them.

Re: Centaurs

I'm sure everyone here has some deaths to D:2 centaurs. It's no different than if traps sometimes instantly killed you on D:2. Yes it'd be rare but still a reason to change the depth of those traps.

Re: Centaurs

Rather amusingly, I'm playing a felid now and both of my 2 deaths so far (still alive, barely ;)) are from massive packs of centaurs XD speed + range + massive attacks for their level is crazy. Imagine if executioners threw executioner axes :D

Re: Centaurs

I'm kind of the opinion that D:2 centaurs are a feature- much like D:2 Sigmund in LOS of the stairs, and yes, even the occasional unseen mechanical trap before you have the HP, evasion, or AC to survive one hit. Occasional unavoidable deaths are a good thing. :geek:

(Not that a D:2 centaur or Sigmund is even an unavoidable death in all cases, or course).

Re: Centaurs

The sad thing is... a centaur is far more of a threat than Sigmund.

  Code:
 <Sequell> 26 games for mikee_ (place=d:2): 5x , 3x Sigmund, 3x a kobold, 3x Terence, 2x a goblin, 2x Jessica, 2x Ijyb, 2x a gnoll, 1x a worm, 1x an orc priest, 1x a snake, 1x a scorpion

Have you considered that the effect of finding a centaur is much more dramatic when you clear your way to lair by alternating o and tab? Maybe you had some turn(s) to react and didn't even realize it.

Re: Centaurs

I haven't won yet, two runes is highest I have got so far so my noob status is still firmly entrenched. I will say one thing. Stealth is one of the best skills in the game.Anyone that doesn't have a negative penalty I usually work up to at least 8. I can't tell you how many time I have come up on something dangerous and it stayed asleep, allowing me to sneak off to another level.

Maybe just make sure they don't get vorpal bow +4 +5 and flaming arrows +6 until D4.

But anyway, except if I found a really good item, it's early enough so that this kind of death is forgivable.

Re: Centaurs

Some statistics from a player dying waaaaaaaayyyy more often than mikee and minmay:

  Code:
43 games for ldierk (place=d:2): 9x a snake, 7x Sigmund, 6x a gnoll, 3x Crazy Yiuf, 2x Ijyb, 2x Terence, 2x a hobgoblin, 2x a kobold, 1x a sky beast, 1x a bat, 1x an orc priest, 1x a centaur, 1x a rat, 1x , 1x a jackal, 1x an orc wizard, 1x a goblin, 1x a worm

Does not look like centaurs are a real problem for me :) Also I don't mind dying on D:2. Dying after Lair or Orc bugs me ;)

Re: Centaurs

Centaurs are probably the cause of almost all of my least avoidable early deaths. It's frustrating, but I don't necessarily think it's bad that they force me to play with "what if there's a centaur in that room?" in my mind for the entire early game.
