I get that the theme is for the spell to be used in open spaces, but currently it feels very limited even in moderately sized openings.

I have a pretty specific suggestion: Change the requirement of not touching any wall to not touching any wall orthogonally, it should give the spell some more space and not feel so limited by protruding edges.
