Why is Corona so bad?

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

Why is Corona so bad?

So first, Corona has all the usual targeting issues. It's also a pretty subtle effect that doesn't always work and doesn't always last that long when it does.

I would suggest that this is too boring and too fiddly to work as a spell. I would suggest either de-targeting the spell with an AOE effect similar to the new dazzling flash or replacement with an infusion- or confusing touch-ike melee-hex effect that has a chance to distract the target on hit.

Another suggestion: corona could make it impossible to miss the affected actor

If you do either of these you have to increase the spell several levels or it will be absurdly overpowered. Although sometimes it does seem like being absurdly overpowered is the main design goal for level 1 spells...

Then you have to come up with something new for enchanter to do at XL1.

Perhaps so but tealizard is also right; Corona is a pretty bad spell, as-is.

Re: Why is Corona so bad?

IMO the funny thing about Corona is that you get it on the background that gets the weapon class that has the least problems with accuracy.

If enchanters started with a flail it would be invaluable.

But yeah, any accuracy enhancer seems unnecessary on a class that starts with Short Blades and bonus dexterity

I think something of a decoy would be something fun, a targeted source of noise that could attract enemies towards it. Niche, not raw power but maybe situationally useful.

I don't see why an effect that has a chance to distract a monster when you melee it is necessarily overpowered. Lots of room to adjust for balance there. Main problem is that the natural models are duration spells.
