Are Crocodiles and Alligators swapped?

It's my understanding that Crocodiles grow larger than Alligators. I think the names are swapped vs. the tiles.

That generality is true for most modern crocodilians, and would be true for North American species. However, basically, they're closely related families and the particular species (there are several species in each family) has more of an impact on the size than the familial classification. Full grown specimens of large sized species of alligator are larger than full grown specimens of small sized species of crocodiles.

In an evolutionary view, there have been much larger species of both alligators and crocodiles (and other related crocodilians) in the past.

See for instance:

From a game perspective, the two labels don't really serve to indicate which one is more dangerous than the other. It might be better (to follow a boring DnD convention) if one was a "dire alligator" or "doom crocodile" or something. Unless you're the reincarnation of Steve Irwin, the two creatures are likely to conjure equivalent levels of apprehension in the player.

The tiles are fine, 'cause alligators clearly bite much harder :P
