Ever since the game stopped generating positive enchantments on apparently mundane weapons and armour (to prevent tedious scumming for bonuses), the inconsistency of continuing to generate negative enchantments on apparently mundane weapons and armour has bothered me. I don't see this as a balance issue so much as an annoyance and a lack of internal consistency, because most characters that can't simply read a remove curse scroll and continue on without a second thought is probably a character that hasn't progressed very far into the game, relegating the issue to the category of nuisance. Here's my proposed change:

Weapons and armor with no brand/ego and an enchantment modifier of 0 always appear as mundane, regardless of cursed status.

Weapons and armor with no brand/ego and a positive or negative enchantment modifier always appear as "enchanted", regardless of cursed status.

Weapons and armor with a brand/ego always appear as glowing etc., regardless of enchantment modifier or cursed status.

This would still preserve the risk of getting stuck with a cursed suboptimal weapon choice for characters that start with no weapon and equip the first one they see while improving internal consistency, and would probably also be less frustrating and apparently unfair to new players, meaning they'd be more likely to stick around long enough to realize how deep and enjoyable DCSS is.
