Wand simplification happy dance

1) Wand charges merge upon pickup when the player already has a wand of
that type.

2) Wands no longer have a cap on the number of charges.

3) Remove wand charge identification; now a wand's charges are seen when
picked up.

4) Remove scrolls of recharging, since wand charges are already readily
available, and the aforementioned changes make them even more so.

5) Wands are destroyed when their last charge is used.

Thanks, dev team!

Neato! QoL win.

The question this leaves me with: what is the effective difference between a stack of wand charges and a stack of scrolls?

You can't choose where the stack of charges goes, it's limited by the kinds of wands you find.

Is the only gain in overall charges as suggested in 4) the elimination of wasted charges on un-ID'd wands? Seems to me that eliminating recharge scrolls is a net loss of useful charges in the game, because no one recharges a weak wand like flame or polymorph.

Looks like some weak wands got removed, too. Overall, a very welcome change!

shouldnt wand rarity be adjusted if recharge is removed? Specifically, scattershot and cloud are extremely rare and you wouldnt get much use out of them if they remain at the current rarity.

How is that a difference compared to scrolls?

I'm confused. Are you asking how it's different to find scrolls that can be used on any wand as opposed to charging wands by finding more wands?

Functionally, it means you get fewer uses out of rare wands.

Wands have a target while scrolls don't.

(Other than blinking)

No, I was not talking about Scrolls of Recharging.

"Wands you aim and scrolls you don't" seems like the best answer. Maybe Blinking should be a wand?

Mutations interact differently with scrolls and wands. Maybe Ru too. Scrolls give flat results, wands are skill dependent.

They do work the same inventory-wise now, but so do throwables, certain evocables, and potions.

I do understand the fuss about lost player agency concerning recharging, but it pretty much was just an illusion because of the patent difference in power between wands. It wasn't "I'll recharge the most useful based on situation", it was just choosing the most powerful one in your inventory.

Not really. Ive used recharge plenty of times on "weaker wands" depending on the situation. But its true that the new change will give enough charges to all the wands that you wouldnt have to worry too much except for cloud and scattershot. Now wand of cloud is extremely OP so if the intention was to nerf it, then so be it

Wands have a target while scrolls don't.

Aside from blinking I'd also consider the enchant armor/weapon/brand scrolls to have a target - it's just in your inventory, not in the dungeon.

Regardless, the main difference between wands and scrolls is that wands use your evocations skill and scrolls require no training to be maximally effective. A wand of blinking would imply that training evocations would make you better at it, which is why they should remain scrolls.

Also, forms. You can't use wands in some forms, but you can use scrolls.
