Nah, it sucks for any kinda character. I don't want more food. I almost never buy food from normal shops on any kind of character and when I do it's generally just on a random whim because I'm not buying anything else

I've never run into this. Huh.

Well, most magic-based Gozag characters need a food shop or three. (Melee types can occasionally get by without 'em.) I'll soooommmmmmeeeeetimes buy food for Fedhas characters if I want to make sure I'm squeezing every last drop of piety out of corpses.

I would still be pissed to find a whole bazaar of food shops, though!

I totally fail to understand why and how lithovores would be unable to eat weapons and armor. Just remove the ability to do any combat damage or gain defenses from weapons and armor.

They are not made from rock or rock-like materials. (Lithos is greek for 'rocky'.) A special case could be made for things like crystal plates and the obsidian axe of course...

Most metals are sourced from minerals, and IRL there are classes of bacteria known as lithotropes, some of which use iron as their primary source of energy.

The lithosphere is considered to be all of the earth's crust, and the upper part of the mantle. And virtually all metals that aren't actinides are sourced from the lithosphere in one way or another.

Ergo, I argue that lithovores can eat metal.

I enjoy arguing about the biology of imaginary species as much as the next person, but I wonder if this is the right place...

Chemically (most) rocks/minerals and metals are very different, but there are of course edge cases. So much so that a child without a specialist background will be able to tell them apart!

Unfortunately, metals are not a very well defined group, and neither are minerals or rocks for that matter. However, metals typically good conductors of electricity and heat; rocks are not. Metals are typically malleable; rocks are typically brittle. Metals usually have a lustre; rocks usually don't, although some can be polished. Many metal have magnetic properties, although not all ferromagnetic, while most rocks do not. Metals typically have higher densities than rocks, indeed some of the densest materials known are metallic, such as Osmium. Metals are also opaque, whereas there are quite a few minerals that are not, typically gemstones.

The metals sourced from the lithosphere are typically not found in their metallic form. For example, Fe is only rarely found in its metallic state in nature, but very commonly as a sulfide or one of its various oxides. This largely holds true for all metals humans mine.

I'm confident that lethotropes don't consume iron, but iron sulphate or some other iron compound instead, as sulphate-reducing bacteria are quite common in anaerobic environments.

Taking your argument to an extreme it suggests that iron is the same as, or at least very similar to, rust. I would suggest that weapons, armour, walls gadgets, cutleries, tools and so on made from rust would not function well.

Of course lithovores would be able to eat rust! Therefore they would be able to gain nutrition from corrosion, if any corrodable items remained in the game...
