Display warning for reading useless scroll of fear

Display warning for reading useless scroll of fear

We have smart spellcasting when player gets a warning like "The spell cannot affect any monsters. Cast anyway?" but we do not get a similar warning when known scroll of fear is going to be read when the only monster in view is a berserking Ettin and I've been told that berserking monsters are immune to fear. The same for undead/demons and monsters with infinity MR (orb of fire), they are immune too I think.

Yep, I've fallen for that.

Do monster descriptions give accurate information on this? If not, then I certainly agree with the proposal.

Also magic mapping. "you feel slightly disoriented" might have made sense when secret passages were still a thing, but not anymore.

You still have those - even in the upper dungeon you find rooms that you can only explore (and often even see) from the level below. And in Pandemonium and Hells you have completely shut-off treasure hordes.

Invisible monsters like unseen horrors will screw this up, like many other things.

Of course, one could simply give a warning on visible monsters, rather than all monsters. That would be better than nothing.

Yes, invisible monsters should be ignored like they are for spell casting warning.

Re: Display warning for reading useless scroll of fear

I believe this post was inspired by the game where my ghoul died to mentioned berserkering ettin on the turn I read scroll of fear. So I'd like to clarify: my intention was to read scroll on 'B' button which is presumably always blinking in my games. I use "item_slot ^= scroll of blinking: B" in my rc file. But it has a little buggy behaviour: if you buy a stackable consumable from a shop and it gets added to unknown stack in your inventory, auto_slot won't trigger. (The patch that fixed this was reverted because it did introduce a new bug that sometimes caused items to disappear.)
If you spot a grammar mistake in my post I will appreciate if you PM it.

Intentional or not, it might have saved you!

Yes, it was inspired by that game, now I see my assumption was wrong. Yet the suggested warning can help to other players, especially vs unusual monsters like non-living ones.
Sorry, I couldn't help with that patch when you asked and then it ended a streak in more than year after that :(

On a related note, game should warn you for attempting to use Gozag potion petition at full HP with no monsters in LOS.

You can buff yourself before opening a runed door or going downstairs.

"Warn," not "prevent."

The game should warn you before entering the dungeon. Maybe even prevent.
