Lava item destruction

I had the liar ending with a portal to hell, one of my favorites, and a flying red devil had picked up the gold and random loot on the portal. Not thinking about it, I killed the devil and got a message about 3 items sizzling away.

Is this intened to encourage kiting things away from non-deep water and lava, or is just leftovers from an age past? Gozag moves gold that gets destroyed this way, why not move items?

You awkwardly throw a vestigial +0 fun.
You hear a sizzling splash.
A great rumbling fills the air... all fun has been destroyed!
You feel sad for a moment.

Without sourcediving, I'll guess that the behavior is that you silently don't get a gift, but gift piety timeout gets reset as if you had gotten a gift.

the timeout doesn't reset, but the piety you got doesn't carry over, either, so you can effectively lose gifts by killing stuff over water/lava. and if it's a xom gift it just goes in the water/lava, which means you should minimize the number of turns you spend over water/lava when worshipping xom.
