passive mapping sucks in console

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

passive mapping sucks in console

unless your terminal is huge then it encourages you to press X constantly, since most of the squares it maps are outside of the main viewport

possible fixes in descending order of reasonableness:
1. remove passive mapping
2. make passive mapping apply to the entire level when you first enter it, so you only need to check the map once. it could either give a chance to map the level completely (as a scroll) and otherwise do nothing, or it could always map, say, [mutation level*10]% or [ash piety/5]% of the level.
3. expect everyone to use huge terminal sizes
4. expect everyone to play tiles

That list is in ascending order of reasonableness!

That's probably the prevalent attitude, otherwise the whole "console players can't tell who has a polearm or distortion dagger unless they use x all the freaking time" problem would have been fixed a long time ago. The current warning system doesn't work if multiple enemies show up at the same time.

Re: passive mapping sucks in console

Well, (4) would make me switch to Angband or maybe even one of the newer nethack variants. I'm that diehard w.r.t. to console.

Everything else (except full intrinsic magic mapping) would make me write a proxy that does the passive mapping for me and that's it.

Console is better on phone screens. Otherwise I agree on 4
