Can random uselessness at least get better messages?
a) Call it a "random useless" scroll.
b) It's unidentifiable, because each one is different. (They're just random useless scrolls!) Until of course all the other scrolls are identified. This might tempt some older characters to read-identify more often.
c) Give them more varied messages like...
The scroll links up to the magical computation capabilities of the entire world, producing a long physics problem you can't understand. But it says the answer has long been known to be 42, so you throw it away. It was a random useless scroll.
The scroll explodes, killing you instantly. It then creates a pod that rapidly hatches into a replica similar to you in every noticeable detail. We shall now follow this organism's continuing progress toward the Orb. It was a random useless scroll.
The scroll makes you fart in seven fluorescent colors. It was a random useless scroll.
The scroll provides detailed maps for several major cities. You study these carefully in preparation for your victory tour after you ascend with the Orb. it was a random useless scroll.
The scroll swaps the directions left and right throughout the cosmos. As you are also reversed to a mirror image, you fail to notice the difference in your environment. It was a random useless scroll.
The scroll sends you on a delightful vacation to a parallel universe, where you fall in love with a beautiful ice elementalist and help her to hunt down and cook a large unruly lion. Unfortunately, your sense of refreshment ends when you are returned to the dungeon at the precise moment and status you had when you read it. It was a random useless scroll.
