Can random uselessness at least get better messages?

I'm not quite sure why scroll of random uselessness exists, but in the interest of making it less lame:

a) Call it a "random useless" scroll.
b) It's unidentifiable, because each one is different. (They're just random useless scrolls!) Until of course all the other scrolls are identified. This might tempt some older characters to read-identify more often.
c) Give them more varied messages like...

The scroll links up to the magical computation capabilities of the entire world, producing a long physics problem you can't understand. But it says the answer has long been known to be 42, so you throw it away. It was a random useless scroll.

The scroll explodes, killing you instantly. It then creates a pod that rapidly hatches into a replica similar to you in every noticeable detail. We shall now follow this organism's continuing progress toward the Orb. It was a random useless scroll.

The scroll makes you fart in seven fluorescent colors. It was a random useless scroll.

The scroll provides detailed maps for several major cities. You study these carefully in preparation for your victory tour after you ascend with the Orb. it was a random useless scroll.

The scroll swaps the directions left and right throughout the cosmos. As you are also reversed to a mirror image, you fail to notice the difference in your environment. It was a random useless scroll.

The scroll sends you on a delightful vacation to a parallel universe, where you fall in love with a beautiful ice elementalist and help her to hunt down and cook a large unruly lion. Unfortunately, your sense of refreshment ends when you are returned to the dungeon at the precise moment and status you had when you read it. It was a random useless scroll.

Why not just remove them from the game?

Was really annoying. Seriously, the scroll used to not auto-ID, so unless you either a) had a stack of them or b) got lucky and got "the scroll reassembles itself in your hands!", the scrolls would remain with their randomized (so usually difficult to remember) label. Waiting to get a stack of a scroll before read-ID'ing it is a bad idea, so they could remain unidentified for a long time.

This is one case where NetHack did it better: it uses persistent randomized item appearances*, and gives you chance to type-name consumable objects after you use them.

* They shuffle from game to game of course, but because it picks from a small set, it's easier to remember things like "THARR is /remove curse" or "VELOX NEB has a base price of 60" even if you don't/forget to use type-naming.

... which would then be a basis for removal

Re: Can random uselessness at least get better messages?

Just turn them into scrolls of random usefulness: make every scroll duplicate the effect of another scroll at random.

Definitely need to omit the strategic scrolls (EW, EA, acq, brand weapon, probably some others) from this.

Eh, if you imitated all scrolls, you'd just read them outside of LOS hoping for ?acquirement or ?enchant foo, if you limit only to tactical scrolls, then it would still be a scroll of random uselessness, in practice.

What if we replaced ?uselessness with "scroll of chaos"? Hits everything in LOS with chaos effect. Risky, random — but potentially very useful.

Or you would read them in an emergency (in the early game at least), hoping for blinking, teleportation, fear, summoning, fog.

In the early game, reading unknown scrolls in an emergency already feels exactly like that.

I'm not trying to be obtuse, I just don't see what a scroll version of random effects would really add.

Why in Armok's name would you call it a "scroll of random useless"? Are you an ESL? Because if not, I'm scared. Is it contagious? :P jk
