Let Trog burn manuals of magic skills

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

Let Trog burn manuals of magic skills

It is weird that Trog does not allow to burn manuals of magic skills since they are not different from books, displayed in red also.
I think it will be a tiny buff (there are only a few manuals in a 3 rune game and even less of magic skills) and it is good from flavor standpoint.

Let him hate and burn normal manuals too: what weakling is a Berserk who waste time reading gibberish instead of smashing enemies' skulls?

That could actually be the starting point for a much needed Trog nerf.

What about disallowing scrolls? Would that be too much? If so, make scrolls take more time to read (innate blurry vision, not blocking sInv mut)

Re: Let Trog burn manuals of magic skills

Manuals probably shouldn't exist at all. They're not intuitive (unspoiled players almost always seem to have some misconception about how they work) and don't introduce any new decisions.

I don't like the suggestion in the OP. It's unnecessary complexity that would never matter in practice.

Manuals do introduce new decisions for species with plain aptitudes.

My suggestion will improve qualify of life for troglodits. I created the thread after being surprised that some books were not burned in Elf 3 vault. Manuals look almost identical to books so I press af as soon as I see some books/manuals in view.

If my suggestion is implemented, troglodites will not need to spend time on walking (no apportation, right?) to tile with manuals to check if they can be used with Trog. If manual has not been burned, it can be used.

Just re-flavor manuals to charms. Charm's are often used as inventory items that give a boost so people will be more likely to understand them quickly.

But then people will think they are related to the Charms spell school.

Re: Let Trog burn manuals of magic skills

I think manuals might be better as rare "scrolls of learning" that give you a +4 bonus to a random aptitude, which goes away after you earn X amount of experience points.

edit: don't you dare tell me that this would be an unfair benefit for zigscummers who find manuals for skills they've already maxed at 27.

I've heard devs say that making manuals a use and forget item would make them a no brainer.

Dafuq? No more so that they already are, except for hoarders who need all the inventory space they can get.
