scroll of tempering
reading the scroll prompts you to select a non-artefact weapon or non-artefact non-dragon non-troll armor/shield/cloak/hat/gloves/boots/helmet/barding.
if weapon, brand it randomly with either Freezing or Flaming.
if armor, give it either Fire Resistance or Cold Resistance.
if the item had an ego previously, that ego is overwritten.
scroll of tempering replaces scroll of brand weapon.
advantages:
- consistent with gear from volcanoes and ice caves
- more clear and less spoilery than scroll of brand weapon
- gods don't discreetly interfere with branding (except Dith)
- satisfies desire for a "scroll of brand armor" without the usual problems
I think "tempering" IRL has nothing to do with rF or rC but it sounds good and catchy.
This may be a bad direction to take the game if we want to eventually remove multiple ranks of fire/cold resistance.
