Well, slime creatures that aren't merged, and aren't found out of depth pose approximately 0 danger. A titanic slime creature is a "get the fuck away right now or I'll kill you" level danger. So unless when they gained the ability to merge, they also lost tons of damage, that's a very incorrect statement. Slime creatures generally aren't a danger by themselves, because you just don't stand next to them where they might merge. However, when you're happily killing monsters from your killhole, and a pack of slime creatures shows up, you really wish they couldn't merge. Making you leave a good position is a good indicator that a monster is dangerous, and I will leave a good position to get away from a merged slime creature. I would not do so even if there were 100 slime creatures in a row, if they couldn't merge.
Now, if I only played felids maybe I'd feel different, because with 0 AC you'd rather they do merge I guess. Of course, that assumes you're fighting out in the open for some crazy reason..
