Species Proposal: Changeling

Changeling

Changelings are creations of Xom, a toy that entertained the god for a while, then were cast aside and forgotten. They exist in a constantly changing state.

Species Attributes:
HP: +10%
MP: +10%
Base Stats: Str 7, Int 7, Dex 7
Stat Increase: 1 Str/Int/Dex every 4 levels
Exp Gain: -1
Suggested Classes: Artificer, Wanderer

Traits:
Evolution 1: Xom found this hilarious, Jivya not as much... (I personally think this would be cool if it had access to any mutation in the game)
Gourmand: Changelings can eat anything
Sustained Attributes: Despite their constantly changing body, a Changelings core remains impervious

Aptitudes:
  Code:
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_FIGHTING,       -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_SHORT_BLADES,   -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_LONG_BLADES,    -1),

    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_STAVES,         -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_SLINGS,         -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_BOWS,           -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_CROSSBOWS,      -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_THROWING,       -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_ARMOUR,         -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_DODGING,        -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_STEALTH,        -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_STABBING,      UNUSABLE_SKILL),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_SHIELDS,        -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_TRAPS,         UNUSABLE_SKILL),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_UNARMED_COMBAT, -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_SPELLCASTING,   -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_CONJURATIONS,   -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_HEXES,          -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_CHARMS,         -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_SUMMONINGS,     -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_NECROMANCY,     -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_TRANSLOCATIONS, -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_TRANSMUTATIONS, -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_FIRE_MAGIC,     -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_ICE_MAGIC,      -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_AIR_MAGIC,      -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_EARTH_MAGIC,    -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_POISON_MAGIC,   -1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_INVOCATIONS,     1),
    APT(SP_CHANGELING,      SK_EVOCATIONS,      1),

Summary:
The entire purpose of this species is something fun that, much like Ds, gives you something different every time. I don't think this steps on the design space of Ds in that a Ds' muts are permanent, where a Changeling would exist in a constant state of flux.

Re: Species Proposal: Changeling

At first glance I thought this species was quite weak, but on second glance, their aptitudes are only slightly worse than humans, and in return they get good health and mana, a strong mutation that stands a very good chance of getting you a good set of mutations (assuming it doesnt go away like other species mutations, it will naturally build you a good set of mutations, and it also makes playing mutation roullette much better), and one of the strongest stat splits in the game (21 total is quite high for total starting stats for a species, and 7/7/7 is a really nice split)? As well as an innate advantage in Sustab and gourmand? This species has not nearly enough downside as written.

Re: Species Proposal: Changeling

21 would actually be the 2nd lowest starting stats for a species. (Ghoul has 18)
The average starting stat is 24.

Sustab and Gourmand are both there to keep a couple mutations from being totally game ruining. (Stat death & Starving)

But honestly, if the concept seems fun, and it's just a numbers game, that's something that would get ironed out through playtesting anyway.

Evolution 1 means they'll get less mutations overall than Jiyva followers, or Xom followers, or Demonspawn, or just somebody who really likes quaffing potions of mutation.

Re: Species Proposal: Changeling

There are already two gods for getting random-but-overall-good mutations as you play, I don't think there needs to be a species for it too. And the experience of playing it would be like playing a Hu with slightly more hp and slightly worse apts and stats, because mutations really don't do very much.

My bad, I was looking at the wiki page and it is quite out of date. The source agrees with you.

Crank it up to 2 or 3 then?

Does Evolution only give good muts? I thought it gave both... >.>
That's also why I was thinking it would be neat if their Evo_Mut could give *any* mut in the game.

Re: Species Proposal: Changeling

Evolution gives 40% good mutation, 40% "random" mutation, 20% delete bad mutation (will delete good mutation if it can't find a bad one). Xom gives 50% good mutation, 50% "random" mutation, plus some noise from potions/miscasts. Jiyva gives 25% good mutation, 25% "random" mutation, 20% slime mutation, 25% delete non-slime mutation, 5% delete slime mutation.

It's strange that you're proposing a race with a mutation when you don't even know what the mutation in question does...

For this message the author duvessa has received thanks:

Re: Species Proposal: Changeling

I know that it gives "random" mutations on a consistent basis, which is what I thought would be entertaining.

Mutations roulette from the very start? Sounds fun.

I guess this race can't follow Zin then?
