They are the only undead in the game with !Sil on their spells. It feels like a discrepancy/oversight related to when they used to be undead statues (all statues except Roxanne cannot be Silenced). [Roxanne is also weird; but kinda makes sense because of the lore about her being a HuEE that miscast Statue Form terribly.]

Agreed. It's frustrating that one of the only REALLY GOOD targets for silence is un-silenceable.

http://s-z.org/neil/git/?p=crawl.git;a= ... 4402eb6766This reason btw applies totally to curse skulls too - having never checked, I always thought they were susceptible to silence

Curse toes get a pass because they clearly don't have, and never have had, any means of casting spells through a mouth of any kind. It seems pretty intuitive that they wouldn't be effected by silence.

whereas mummified corpses, skeletons, blobs of slime, and slugs obviously have functioning vocal cords

But they HAVE had functional vocal chords in the past, so you could infer that maybe they are able to speak through the same magical means that are keeping them alive after death.
Curse toes have never had anything resembling functional vocal chords.

The backstory on curse toes is they were originally attached to some ill-fated human who was on vacation in the woods and got attacked by demonic spirits. This person had their toes possessed by an evil spirit, so they cut them off with a chainsaw. The possessed toes retained the ability to speak in their previous owner's voice, and from time to time they like to drop some pretty epic one-liners, like "Groovy!" and "Hail to the king, baby."

My mistake.
