Retroactive patches?

Something like this: https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commit/8c7c337052e4039521758f08d5033b85b61eb946, and related commits.

Would that be patched into earlier versions? (Would be nice.)

Yes, it and related fixes were back-ported into 0.16. See the 0.16 commit log.

We regularly do this for any important fixes from trunk that also affect the stable release and then make stable point releases for download as necessary (0.16.3 will be released along with 0.17). Basically if it's an important fix that affects stable, we'll backport it pretty quickly. For versions older than stable, we don't update those since they don't get a lot of either online play nor downloads, so going through the trouble of making point releases for them isn't worth it.

Awesome. 0.16 is fine. I never did mind shadow traps. :)

I don't suppose square LoS would be considered and "important fix," would it? (just kidding)

Thanks for the explanation.
