To Tasonir. The number of heal wounds potions per unit exploration increases with the depth of the floor, linearly. So D9 has 9 times the heal wounds potions of D1. Earlier I used logarithm, but I found that I ran out of heal wounds potions by the time I did the rune branches. Of course one could tweak the constants around, or use some other function.

What has abyss been like with the change? Especially when worshipping someone that changes how the abyss functions like Lucy (abusable enter/exit abyss), Chei (reduced abyss spawn rate but also much slower to reveal tiles), or Ash (makes it a lot easier to dodge enemies in the abyss and exit when you want to). Especially because if I'm not mistaken the abyss is considered a low environmental density.

I haven't tried abyss, or for that matter, pan. The rate depends on exploration / env.density. I don't know the exact mechanics of how density is calculated.

Ok, I tried a DDFi of Qazlal with the new settings. They seem ok. At one point, I was able to build up a large stock of heal wounds (60 or so), but the branch ends cut my supply quite fast. Vaults:5, Depths:5 and Zot:5 were particularly harsh. I have an idea of reducing overall rate, while special-casing branch ends to double the rate, but I haven't tried it yet.

I haven't done extended yet. Here is the character after clearing Zot:5.

To be fair the branch ends probably sapped your healing potions more than normal because you were worshipping Qazlal but not really leaning too too heavily on the invocations (only 2 disaster area casts). My last Qazlal game I used Disaster Area 3 time on V:5 alone and had over 250 upheaval casts (this was 15 rune game though).


It's a good start that the mechanic is workable though!

Actually, this is my first game with Qazlal. I probably underused disaster area. I did use it twice on Depths:5 (cost me a *), since it had Mennas, Jory and Enchantress, together with a spriggan defender with a distortion weapon. I still had to berserk after that to kill Mennas! Didn't really need to use it in Vaults:5, since I slipped past the guards and went into a corridor.

I also went with a 2-hander to see how much damage I can soak: I had the option of using a shield, which is a fairly good option with Qazlal.

Yeah shields are pretty nice on Qazlal. That makes sense for V:5, though upheaval may have still been of more use to you there than you took advantage of (notably you can blast down convokers or wardens hiding behind stuff).

The sort of nice thing about Qazlal is it's really not that big of a deal if you drop to 5* for a little bit because you build piety pretty easily and the passive effects are great, but not necessarily vital. It's not like Makhleb where the lower your piety is the less often you get healing or Chei's stat boost. So long as your resistance/ac boost triggers eventually you're getting most of the piety dependent benefit from Qazlal.

It may be a sign that the function needs to be tweaked. The goal would be make the stack size as smooth as possible.Currently my experience is that the stack I build up in the earlier areas is consumed in the branch ends. Note that I finally ended up with 10 heal wounds after clearing Zot:5.

I tried various functions. Initially I had a fairly large base heal wounds rate, which increased as a logarithm of the depth. I found that the early game had a lot of heal wounds, while I ran out after the rune branches. Here I tried a low base rate, which goes up linearly. Another idea would be to have a lower still base rate, while special-casing branch ends to double the normal, or something like that.

I would note that the current situation is not really an improvement on this, since you can always recharge your heal wounds wand. And you get passive healing with Makhleb for free, for instance.

You might try a hysteresis based approach, namely give fewer potions if the player's supplies are stacking up. Essentially, compare the number you've gifted to the number they've quaffed. Aim to keep the number available at a given time at some target, with a limit on the rate of replenishment. In some sense, this penalizes hoarding and encourages use at a certain rate.

I frequently end up with that much healing on winning characters*, who aren't DD, but the point is that we're throwing a lot more consumables at players than they need to win with decently strong characters. Or that good players need radically less consumables than okay players, and maybe he had a good run. I'm not claiming that this isn't a sign that there is something wrong - I haven't tried the patch. It could be wrong. But that's something that needs a lot more runs to determine.

I tried extended with the DDFi. Was pretty smooth. Got killed by the Serpent of Hell, but was mostly due to sloppy play.

General observations on stack size of heal wounds potions:

In Hell and Pan, stack size stayed pretty much constant, or even fell off a bit. (What you see at the end was built up mostly before Hell/Pan).

In Abyss, heal wounds dropped at a very quick rate, but Abyss as a Qazlal worshipper is very rough. I was forced to quaff them almost as soon as they dropped, because I had almost no respite, and got mobbed everywhere I went. For a stealthy build, it might be a bit overpowered, so I think it might need some tinkering. Not sure how.

It is an idea, but I am not sure it makes sense. I was playing like a "normal" game, wasn't trying to either hoard or play cautiously or recklessly.

The varying stack size came about "naturally", because the branch ends are meant to be tougher than the branch generally. So I am not sure it would make sense to penalize or incentivize behaviour over which the player has no control, but is simply inherent in the way branches are designed. To my mind, a solution based on special-casing branch ends makes more sense. (I haven't tried anything yet, because I am not sure how much of a problem this is, and how to solve it).
