I have a HEEE in V1 with bare feet because the game did not generated a single pair of boots
and it is not too uncommon to have this kind of problem

Yiuf guarantees cloak, and recently added Robin has helmet
Why not extend this to all aux armour

It does not have to be an enchanted piece, mudane one would be just fine

boots for Natasha
gloves for Edmund
shield for Terrance

maybe bardings for Nessos and Vashnia

and while we are at it, we could give spellbooks to the caster uniques like this

Surely not boots (or any other armour) for Natasha.

There has been talk about giving uniques some items that would make killing them more desirable. I guess aux armour pieces would serve that purpose just fine.

Note that you might still end up on V:1 barefooted, because uniques aren't guaranteed to be generated.

I ascended one character without boots when the only pair generated in the game was eaten by old corrosion.

Donald's shield is early enough that Terrence doesn't need one.

I find enemies with shields annoying in a way that I don't find evasive enemies. If I miss with a wand, I feel like it's my fault for not training evocations enough. If a wand hit does no damage, well, then the enemy was clever to wear enough armour to absorb the hit.

But if it's blocked? That's just not fair. I wasted a turn and a charge for nothing! How could I have forseen the shield?

I don't know why it works this way to me, but it does.

<offtopic>Why do you think that wands should be able to deal with everything? There is a wand of fireball by the way, it ignores shield.<offtopic>

Now that weapon brand is visible, you can take a look at unique and decide if you want to take risk to kill it.

What wands even respect shields? Magic dart, frost, flame?

Donald can appear in Crypt. I don't think there's any reasonable definition of "early" that includes that. Whether it's desirable to increase the odds of finding an early shield is debatable, but if it is desirable, I don't think Donald qualifies.

Anyway, if an early unique were to get a guaranteed shield, I'd go with buckler. I've definitely had games where I was flooded with regular shields but no bucklers, which makes training shields a huge pain.
