Suggestion for new unique: O'Malley

After playing a fire/necromancy character, I thought the idea of a unique based on the combination would be fun. Whether or not the idea is too contrived or technical is up to the experts. My apologies if a similar idea has been suggested before.

Image
A rather portly necromancer who dabbled in the basics of necromancy, but found his true passion in pyrotechnics.

O'Malley generates with a group of lesser zombies and skeletons which he happily utilizes as explosives. He will haphazardly hurl fireballs at the player, with an inclination for friendly fire (badum tsh). He has a sizable health pool but isn't very threatening in melee. Generates with a robe of fire resist and a scroll of immolation.

I'm not 100% on how AI works, but he would have these behaviors:
Will start spamming inner flame/haste on his zombies and skeletons when the player comes into view.
Will attempt to engulf both his own minions and the player with fireballs.

HP:90
HD:10
XP:1150
Speed:10
AC:5
EV:4
MR:60
Attack1: 8 (hit: plain)

Slot1 Inner Flame
Slot2 Haste Other
Slot3 Fireball
Slot4 Animate Dead
Slot5 Bolt of Fire
Slot6 Inner Flame

The Dungeon:11-14
The Orcish Mines:2-4
The Lair:3-5
The Snake Pit:1-3
The Spider's Nest:1-3

I mostly like this idea, though I think it might be a nightmare for melee-heavy characters. The locations he can spawn in are a bit messed up IMO -- if he's fine on Lair:1, he's way too weak for Shoals:5.

I took off the watery branches (he can't swim!) and changed the spawn locations a bit.

Yeah, I can see melee-only characters having problems with this guy. Then again, all you'd have to do is set off one of his zombie friends and then book it, as they'd probably chain reaction off of each other. Plus, it's not like every unique needs to be easy to beat with every possible character.

If he can show up on mid-Lair, probably he should only be able to show up on the first or maybe second floor of the Lair branches.

Seeing a bunch of zombies in Lair is going to be a pretty big red flag. You'll definitely know who the boss of the pack is, and zombies don't shout so you can easily lure them away individually. Same problem that Josephine has, really. It might be better to give him a live yak pack, since these can spawn naturally in both D and L, and he can still Animate them after exploding them.

Currently no monsters cast inner flame at all.

Not if they are friendly or mindless. Monster inner flame could theoretically be set to only target enemy undead, mindless or enemy minions.

I also like the unique.

It seems like you'd want different 'kinds' of monster inner flame, like how there's 'haste' and 'haste other' spells.

At low hp he inner flames himself and then blows himself up with fireball.

Hasted yaks would be pretty scary, especially considering they explode on death. What other animals aren't already utilized by another unique, and wouldn't totally maul most characters? Frogs? Porcupines? Quokkas?

You could do sheep instead of yaks if you wanted to reduce the danger level here.

That said, doesn't Polyphemus already cover the Y class of monsters?

Any reason he is both Irish and a pyromaniac?

I am actually immensely curious as to how the guardian golem (which sponges damage for you even if you aren't hiding behind it) and the suicide kobold (which explodes in a humorous manner) were considered to be similar.

Re: Suggestion for new unique: O'Malley

^ Guardian Golem overheats (gets inner flame) if it takes too much damage. Also I think they were both being workshopped at around the same time as potential candidates for the book of calling revamp.
