Re: Species: Wraith

Wraiths aren't invis in Crawl, so the race would have to be Shadow Wraith. This species is flavored as insubstantial, but there's no explanation for why it can wield weapons. Can it also wear armour? If it transmutes into statue form, can it wear armour? Can it wear jewelry?

Permainvis is a huge problem, since it means 70-80% of the monsters in the game can be one-shot-stabbed to death, including all of the first 10 floors or so. Also, its average aptitude for all the skills you would actually need is about +3, so you effectively gain double experience. This race might as well start off at level 13 or so.

It kindof seems like you'd just cruise through the game until you find something that can see invisible, and then that thing would kill you.

Re: Species: Wraith

Permanent invis seems like it would be to powerful, and not change the way you play all that much. What if instead, you would become invisible after resting, then you'd have a set number of moves before becoming visible, or each move has a % chance to turn you visible. Although with no hunger clock you could stand around for 100s of turns hoping monsters wander close to you. Not sure how you could prevent this.

What if for gear you had normal slots, but could only use three of them at a time. For example you could wield a weapon, body armor, and a ring but nothing else, or you could have two rings and a cloak. The flavor being interacting with the physical world is possible but difficult.

I'd assume these guys would share the same god/spell restrictions as mummies.

A ghostly player race and a race with some form of innate invisibility sounds cool I'd love to see this idea fleshed out more.

Re: Species: Wraith

First, invis is powerful and shouldn't be given out so freely.
Second, not only does giving them immunity to hunger step on mummies' toes, but they have better aptitudes mummies in everything other than fighting, fire magic, and crossbows.

Re: Species: Wraith

All sources of invisibility and hasting (minus berserk and finesse) give contamination because invisibility and speed too strong, especially if you're allowed to do it for a long time, and none of it is ever permanent.

There's no way to really balance out a race to have invisibility w/o contam. He could have -5 aptitudes across the board or just 1 hit point yet as long as you have a dagger and don't stop training stealth nothing early game will spot you. Then when you clear early game you're dead because your apts are too low.
