Over the weekend pushed a bunch of patches, including:
* Changing Sac Armour eligibility to prevent those unable to train Armour due to race from taking it
* Prevent conjured minions (e.g. ball lightning, battlesphere) from being made hostile by Sacrifice Love
* Made language around hands singular case after Sacrifice Hand
* Added ontoclasm's ability tiles
* Cleaned up and fixed issues with the * ability
* Added a wizard command to force new sacrifices
And a few other little things.The main remaining issue is acquirement, because it scares me.

Just won a Iashol game. Cataclysm felt pretty strong, specially considering it costs nothing. and Power Leap is good too, almost a free Cblink. add in healing, and that was the easiest game I ever played. oh, and I did not understand what does sacrifice sanity does. negative slaying or something like that? it was not very clear.

The Horror status gives -slaying (accuracy and damage) and a wizardry penalty, each in proportion to the amount of Horror you have
I had the same doubt above, a posteriori makes sense but difficult to figure out without hints. What about a prompt when getting this sacrifice: "You're afraid that you'll be less proficent in killing foes" or something like that?

Edit: Making monsters permanently mute is pretty sweet.
Edit2: I've taken the "You are hated by all." sacrifice, but elementals from the evokers seem to stay friendly.
Edit3:
Crashed the game trying to leap while constricted by a Naga ritualist. I got the constriction escape attempt failed message and the attack animation at my current location, but then crashed.

Some minor issues: When offered the chance to take a -2 str mutation, it's called "weak", which I thought was going to be the status that orange demons inflict on you. Maybe call it something else, feebleness, weakened?
I sacced a few spell schools, and when reading a book, select a spell that you can't memorize, at the bottom it shows:
You cannot memorise or cast this spell because you are a minotaur.
I don't think minotaurs are blocked from any spells, it should be because I sacrificed it willingly
New * aura seems a bit weaker/less obvious than the old one, but that's probably good because the old one was too powerful. Seems to be helping, but I'm a minotaur with a demon blade of pain in lair, so things have been pretty tabby and it's hard to tell. I was playing harder combos but kept dying before I could make any sacrifices

Haha, yeah. Most of the time it makes monsters that try to attack you just stop, but sometimes it also makes them attack their friends or themselves. That's the most spectacular example of it I've seen so far.

Yeah, that's a known bug. A patch for that is already available, but hasn't been loaded onto the experimental server yet. Thanks for reporting!

There wasn't anything in LOS that I recall, and I hadn't been using any summons before this either.
The new sac sanity seems to be much easier to understand, although I have trouble figuring out how strong it should be. I mean, fighting shouldn't be impossible with it, you can't avoid it. The effect seems small, but nothing at this point is going to stand up to a demon blade of pain even though it's +0 and I have (let's just estimate) a -5 slaying penalty or so. Is there a guideline about how much damage it should take off? Like, yellow is intended to be -10% damage, red should be -20%? Probably going to need a lot more games to get a better feel for it in any case. I have been using gargoyles for my "easy" runs lately, but this run reminded me why minotaurs have usually had that role. They just slaughter everything.

There was a whole thread about renaming it, and Ru got the most votes.
Sidenote: the spamminess and antenna-like nature of the current Sacrifice Horror were fixed last Sunday, but the patch hasn't been added to the experimental server yet.

Advice to fellow ru players: Slow healing is a great sacrifice for a decent chunk of piety, and you can overcome it with things like the regen spell. Do NOT be a total fool and make the sacrifice twice. Even the regen spell can't help you then, you'll forever gain no health while in sight of monsters. Interestingly enough, I haven't found it that hard to deal with so far. And I've had slow healing 2 for at least the last 3-4 levels, it hasn't been that short of a time.
I also couldn't use cataclysm most of the early/mid game because with 0 spellcasting I just didn't have the mana to pay the 8mp cost! That was funny. Now that I can't regen anymore I should probably just sac charms/necromancy for 200 piety
As a side note, sword of Jihad is totally worth dealing with the *rage property, even if it means you have to hit 5 a bunch more.

More bugfixes. Please let me know if you have a bug that isn't on this list. These aren't on the CSZO server yet. I'll update this post when they are.
* God description shortened.
* God ability descriptions on the ^ screen are shortened.
* Improved can't-memorize message for sacrificed magic schools so it no longer says "you can't memorize this because you are <species> or <form>"
* Ru max piety is 6* even (160 piety). As a result, all piety checks and increases have been adjusted around the new scaling. A few sacrifices had their piety value increased. Also, removed piety tapering that was applied for other gods, which should reduce the number of sacrifices needed to hit max piety.
* Improved the faltering message for monsters with fake spells and priests.
* Prevented a crash on power leap failing to escape constriction.
* Cleaned up some issues with rings/sac hand.
* Made elementals from evokers be hostile under sac love, fixed a crash w/ sac love and box of beasts.
* Cleaned up some mutation descriptions to improve the quality of some messaging.
* Fixed the message upon sacrificing a hand for octopodes/felids.

All branches are available from git. Git knows all, sees all..
More seriously, all webtiles experimental builds are built from branches that are in
public git. In this case, the branch name is 'iashol'. IIRC once you have a clone of DCSS git, you can switch to the iashol branch in the usual way --
and proceed to build as usual.

like I said, cataclysm is a free ability that solves any problem you could possibly find yourself into. power jump is free cblink. put a free heal on top of that, and you get yourself a pretty strong god.

I think that's an oversimplification -- two of the three have a cost in draining and all of them have the cost of disabling any more use of god abilities for a substantial length of time. Ely gives you healing you can spam as well as an insta-kill on most monsters, and Zin and Chei give you 'solve-any-problem' buttons that you can use with much greater impunity, given how easy it is to get piety with each. Power Leap is probably the most overtly strong of the three, but it's not as strong as even a single scroll of blinking in terms of escaping/ninja'ing.
If you look at the Ru wins posted so far (including yours!) they actually use the active abilities quite infrequently -- except for the one person who felt that Ru was underpowered.
Edit: that's not to say that Ru isn't overpowered -- I suspect it may be -- but I don't think it's as cut and dried as Hersch I suggests.

Agreed - as an example, I used cataclysm twice, power leap 13 times, and draw out power twice. I'd probably have used draw out power more but my run had an abundance of healing - both the regen spell before I took up slow healing 2, and a heal wounds wand with more recharging than I could use as well. But draw out power absolutely saved my life in zot:5 when I had -potion and -scroll and was heavily poisoned.
I'd say the main strength of Ru is the two auras, which are quite potent with max piety. If you wanted to nerf Ru, you could scale down the auras slightly. I don't think that's necessary right now, but if it is, that's the place.
What's the %chance of no action and %chance for a mob to hit itself if you're at max piety?

The chance for a monster to take no action instead of attacking is 10% at max piety, and the chance to attack something other than the player is 5% at max piety. Retaliation on damage is 33% chance of triggering at max piety, but there's a second check before actually applying a status that takes into account monster HD and the amount of damage done to determine what, if any, status is applied.

Don't get me wrong, I really like this god. Just when people start hinting at nerfing it I'm a bit annoyed. It's already weaker than Trog, Ely, and Sif. I disagree that a game with this god is any easier than with a different god on a decent combination. I like the sacrifice mechanic as it leads to an interesting game without feeling like you're playing a "challenge" game.

Ru is even letting me enjoy DD, one of my least favourite races. DDBe of Ru (at 3 runes now) has spent a lot of time being red-drained by using the healing ability, so overtrain your important skills a bit if you do this.

Posing the question of "would you give up X to get Y" is pretty universally interesting as long as the decision isn't obvious. The old idea I had was for sacrifice altars that ask you to give up some about of max HP for some amount of slaying, since that's hard to answer. (How much hp is +1 slaying worth?) I think, with Ru, it fits nicely into the god framework and thus doesn't require any new mechanics outside of that, and goes way further and is way more interesting than any idea I had.

Monks are probably one of the easier builds to give up a hand on. You lose a shield, but were probably doing blade hands for absurd damage anyways. You'll only hit with your main blade now, but that still does plenty of damage. The biggest drawback is the loss of the second ring, in this case.
That said, it's a huge sacrifice and one you shouldn't make lightly. Especially that early, when you don't know if you'll find blade hands soon or not...

On D:2 sacrificing your hand loses you little and gain you a ton. However, later in the game once you have two decent rings and wish you either had 20% more damage or a solid additional line of defense you'll feel the loss. Compare it to Fedhas, who gives you early game near-invincibility (e.g. mushrooms) if you join the god on D:2 and requires you to give up essentially nothing.

Case of Bart the Devastator (Deep Elf Fire Elementalist)I managed to get out of dungeon alive with 3 runes under Ru worship. Although the game wasn't excessively difficult, in current implementation Ru seemed to be a challenge god. I sacrificed:
- health -> You are frail (-10% HP).
- drinking -> You cannot drink potions while threatened.
- artifice -> You cannot study or use magical devices.
- love -> You are hated by all.
- durability -> You cannot train your Armour skill.
- health -> You take slightly more damage. (-3 AC)
Lack of access to any wands mficade mid-game signiantly more difficult and was a bit limiting in late game. I was surprised that this sacrifice is relatively "cheap" in terms of piety gain. My defenses and HP sucked - even more than I like it on my deep elves. Thirstiness was problematic - no curing can kill. Love and armour did not have big impact on gameplay. I do not think I could make less crippling sacrifices - two ring slots and full spellcasting possibilities were a must have for me. Sanity seemed a gross sacrifice. I saw also person who got deterioration 2 from purity - thank you, no.
Enough about self-mutilation, few lines about benefits. Mana/health potion was good, although didn't surpass what a normal potion could do. Leap was useful to escape from overly difficult combats. Cataclysm was great in lair - I didn't try it later. Passive bonuses were helpful, although didn't delight due to unreliability. It was funny when enemies hit themselves, but it didn't make me more confident about my strength.
ConclusionRu is a fresh breeze in musty Crawl dungeons, but seems imbalanced. For me, downsides were greater than benefits and I would be safer if I remained godless. This isn't necessarily a drawback, but I suspect that people might choose Ru for challenge only. Things worth attention:
1) Powers are somewhat unreliable. Passive abilities happen to not trigger when they are most needed. Cataclysm applies random statuses and leaves with heavy draining, so it's risky at the start of combat and expensive as finisher.
2) Active abilities feel somewhat weak. I know that drinking potion of heal wounds and magic takes two turns, but rarely both are needed at the same time. I would highly appreciate if recharge also cured status problems - especially when -noPotion triggers. Was it considered to add random debuffs to the effect of leap? I think it could come at the price of draining - it seemed strange that this ability is free to use.
3) Sacrificing system is not clear. I do not want to have plain numbers for piety gain, but at least grading 'small/medium/high/very high' would be welcome. Also, without reading this forum, I could not determine what sacrificing sanity does (and so I did not take it).
4) Minor annoyance: after sacrificing artifice, access to TRJ vault is limited to high level earth spells / ctele (bear in mind that player is limited to scrolls for teleportation). Also one has to rely on flight spell or potions to get over lava.

Thanks for the write-up, Bart! I watched you do Zot:5 and ascend, and it seemed like you were doing quite well there, though you didn't make much use of Ru powers, as you said. There was one point in the ascent where you used Draw Out Power to recover while fighting a pan lord, a death cob, and an iron devil, and I thought that Cataclysm might have been a better choice, since it would have wiped out the entire group, but otherwise it seemed like you had everything under control.
Regarding the issues you described:
* Sacrifice Evo is one of the higher piety sacrifices (35 piety, compared with 20 for stealth/armour/dodging, 25 for Arcana), but it might well deserve a piety buff. Exact piety numbers for each sacrifice are probably the thing that could use the most review at this point.
* You mentioned not being sure what Sacrifice Sanity did. Did you read the help text for the ability?
- Code:
Adherents who choose to sacrifice their sanity become terrified of dangerous
monsters. Such monsters fill them with horror, which interferes with their
combat and spellcasting abilties. If you make this sacrifice, your powers
granted by Ru will become stronger in proportion to the value of the
sacrifice, and you may gain new powers as well.
* The "small/medium/high/very high" piety grade for each sacrifice that you requested already exists. It gets displayed when you make a sacrifice before you choose to accept or reject. Similarly, if the sacrifice could have multiple possible outcomes, the exact outcome is listed before you accept or reject the sacrifice, so you can't get deteriorating II by accident -- you have to accept it both times.
* Draw Out Power curing status effects is a good idea, and one I hadn't previously considered. Do you have a suggestion of which status effects it should clear? My first reaction would be poison, confusion, mesmerize, and petrify.
* What would it take to make Cataclysm worthwhile to you?

Possibly it would be safer
I tried to avoid heavy draining since I had a feeling that during ascension I risk more by additional draining.

Thanks! I didn't notice that. Would it be possible to display the direct outcome in ability screen? It's few key presses more to check it and not obvious the first time you do it.

The bloody tiles was a previous version of sac sanity that is no longer the current version. "Interfering with combat and spellcasting" is somewhat vague, it's a -slaying and -wiz penalty. I still say that it should be -slaying and -spellpower, rather than success, but for now it's still -wizardry as far as I know. The reason for that being that then you have to keep checking your success rates to see if you can still cast your spells, which is an interface problem, rather than just hitting for slightly less damage with your spells (which is more like what happens with melee).

Doesn't it overlap with Ely purification?
To make it a little different you may consider to get rid of every status as a purge, either good or bad, but progressively to avoid instadeaths like vanishing flying on deep water/lava. More or less like the fading effects of resistance potion.

I have been testing Ru for the past two days.
The game seems to be crashing after leaving Ru with this message:
ASSERT(divine_retribution(angry_gods[random2(angry_gods.size())])) in 'religion.cc' at line 4018 failed.
Sacrifice love:
The scroll of summoning didn't summon anything, which I assume is intended behaviour.
It also doesn't work on demonspawns summoned demonic guardians, but I will test this again because I am not 100% sure If I really sacrificed love.
I like this god, the active power are all strong. The power leap is not a good option to explore otherwise inaccesible places
. Cataclysm killed most of the stuff that was around me and draw power saved me few times. The auras are fun, too. Especially paralysis on enemies.
