Unseen Horrors

Back once again after a long break...Typical rage post, but whats fun about unseen horrors?

I understand invis enemies can add some flavour and interesting difficulty - but unseen horrors have never really been anything but popcorn, or a complete nuisance to me if I don't have Sinv.

I wouldn't mind so much, but I had one on one level, so I dived, The next level had two. I killed one, avoided the other and went back up. Then got killed by the one on the level above.

Perhaps I'm missing something but I'm not sure how I could have avoided this aside from spamming consumables and hoping for the best. Both levels were very open, so no chance to lure into a corridor. I had no options to see invisible and really no other way to deal with them that I'm aware of.

I'm not saying remove them, but 3 of them across 2 adjacent levels is RNG badness (bad luck, I can accept!) But i propose making them slower - or making them fade in and out of visiblity at least. A bat that hits like a truck and moves two tiles away from you before you can react while staying invisible just plain sucks when the RNG machine gives you no Sinv

I guess my point is, if you can see them they are meaningless. If you can't, there isn't a whole lot you can do except try to avoid them. This makes them essentially near impossible or trivial as a result of RNG if you got Sinv; which isn't really fun or something you can play your way out of

Not a fan of unseen horrors either, but scrolls of fog can help. Also if you have a wand of digging then you can often create a corridor.

On the balance I like them being in the game.
There's a lot of different ways to manage an encounter with an UH, many of them unusual. And it's fun when a terrifying encounter is suddenly manageable.
OTOH, they're yet one more mechanism that punishes careless (auto) exploration. If you're caught far away from safe stairs at lowish health, sometimes there's not much you can do.

What's fun is working out various tactics for dealing with them when you don't have sInv (there are quite a lot of potential options), and to a lesser degree, the strategic risk management decisions around preparing to encounter them. Not having any terrain at all to utilize can make them far more dangerous if you don't have any applicable spells, abilities, or consumables... but that goes back to the strategic risk management. If you have no tools for dealing with them without use of terrain, that's motivation to dive deeper into Lair or Orc than you otherwise might when you first discover them, and if those branches are deeper into the dungeon than you're comfortable with, horrors are an incentive to push further into the ID minigame earlier than you otherwise might.

Yeah scrolls etc can work I guess. I just find them more of a nuisance than anything else. And I have died to them a handful of times with no real way of dealing with them even after clearing most of lair, just because no SInv (which seems to be quite rare now)
