No randart Protection brand

Has anyone noticed Protection randarts dont exist?
Is this intentional?

  Code:
A +3 staff (not quarterstaff) {rElec rF++ rC++ MR++ AC+5}. On melee attacks, rolls two (evocations/27) checks, and if either succeeds, it does an extra 9+1d15 damage that randomly checks one of rF, rC, rElec, AC.
In 0.13 and older, +3,+1 quarterstaff with protection (+5 AC), Hunger, Noises, rF++, rC++, MR++.

AC is not a randart property, so they cannot exist.

You will similarly never see randart running boots, or randart archery gloves, etc. Randarts get no ego at all but then get some artefact properties.

So yes, this is intentional.

I believe Phillip was thinking of weapons of protection, not shields of protection.

Also, randart shields do get a chance for an ego (spirit shield), though maybe this is implemented as a randart property?

Why isnt protection brand an option or randarts?

You will find that many things in Crawl don't have a reason.

I'm guessing the reason randart weapons don't get protection is that, back when randarts could have AC as a random property (0.7-), protection would have been redundant with that.

There isn't a comment in the source code to that effect, but that's not surprising since protection isn't specifically excluded as a weapon brand - it's just not included on the list of possible brands.
