FR: Mark the square that "X moves out of view" from

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

FR: Mark the square that "X moves out of view" from

Autoexplore...
"_The hobgolin moves out of view."
Player stares

The creature was in view and moved out, but from what square?

Can we get a simple gold x or something to mark the space they occupied?

We have the autoexplore footprints now so this makes sense to add.

File this one under "Things I didn't realize bothered me very much until someone posted a great fix for the problem on GDD." This would be grand. Good call bbb.

I swear to god there was something for this on mantis. or maybe that was for monsters that appear & immediately go invisible...?

Regardless, it's a good idea, of course

I'd go one step further, and suggest the X should be on the square the monster moved to. The player character saw the monster, and then saw it step out of his view, so he saw which way it went.

Thanks for bringing it up BBB, it's so obvious in retrospect

It might make 'sense' that you'd know where it moved to, but in Crawl you currently don't get this information.

Currently in crawl you don't get that information either, that's why this is in a gdd thread. I was just saying if the devs were to add this feature, it may make more sense to indicate the square the creature moved to, rather than the square he moved from. Currently you get neither piece of information.

You don't know what square it moved to though, you can't see it.

You do usually get the information about where he moved from if you have lag! (possibly also with force_mores?)

What bothers me more is when Sigmund goes invis before I spot where he was located.

https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=4118 is somewhat related (actually, a bit more like what damiac suggested later).

Ah, yeah, that was exactly it! Thanks!

Yeah, I'd much rather the original suggestion be implemented - like mumra said, that approach is going to tend to leave annoying 'ghosts' everywhere, and generally seems like an unnecessary complication.

Re: FR: Mark the square that "X moves out of view" from

But with the original proposal, that 'ghost' will be in LOS. Right now, those are generally only allowed out of LOS, and disappear when in LOS. Plus, they signify the 'last known location' of a monster. If I saw a monster walk north around a corner, the 'last known location' of that monster is 1 square north of the corner, not the square he left, which I know for a fact he is no longer occupying.

Either way is better than nothing though.

To my thinking, the simplest solution is to mark the now-empty square with a 1 turn duration "track" mark anytime a monster leaves sight.
