Remove burdened and item weight

Re: Remove burdened and item weight

I submitted a patch for testing: https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=7132

Also, some thoughts on this?:
Right now the patch limits certain item stacks (javelins, rocks) to a finite number. After play-testing a bit, I'm convinced this is not the best route to take because it still requires ammo stash trips and prevents javelins from having brands.

A better alternative would be a TP system (throwing points), which is essentially MP except used for throwing heavy things. This means you could carry 100 large rocks, but could only throw 5-10 in a fight.

TP sounds like a really bad idea, I don't see how that is at all better than the current situation (which I don't see any problem with fwiw).

It's not very different from breath attacks. It's also fairly easy to explain: "Your arm is too tired to throw another javelin."

Except breath cooldown can be communicated by a simple status light, whereas each type of ranged attack having a different TP limit and needing to communicate to the player how close they are to each limit is both stretching screen real estate to the limit and also really complex to code.

Oh also players would start just kiting monsters until their TP had recharged, making throwing just another combat mechanism which worked exactly like spellcasting.

The only thing that needs it is throwing.

This is a very good point, but probably overstated because most characters with throwing deal more damage in melee.

I don't really know what to do to fix throwing.

Why not let throwing ammo stack infinitely like other ammo? It's not like throwing would become overpowered...

That would be completely fine by me. They'd be even more similar to crossbows though, is that a problem?

Re: Remove burdened and item weight

Mechanically, it's because clubs and spears can get enchantments and curses, and how would your cursed -2, +0 club of floor trash stack with your +0 club of floor trash? You get a situation like dagger enchantment in nethack.

My solution there would be to stop doing that. The "items that can be missiles or melee weapons" thing is kind of neat in concept, but don't think it adds enough to the game to make up for the early-game "oh look my inventory is all full of clubs" silliness.

Making big, stackable, snakable items would be a buff to Sticks to Snakes. But really, "inventory management annoyance" is not a very good tool for spell power balance.

Wait, javelins don't stack infinitely?

In the patch they don't.

What game are you all playing that you find infinite javelins anyhow? I'm happy in a non-shoals game if I find a dozen in a game.

In a Shoals game obviously which includes 50% of all games :)

Re: Remove burdened and item weight

I think equipped weapon/armor could have reduced weight. Or food items in general.
