Any reason to keep junk scrolls or potions?

Is it worth taking the trouble to collect garbage like scrolls of random uselessness, potions of degeneration, etc.?

I'm mostly wondering if they have the potential to shield other scrolls/potions from being destroyed. (I've seen conflicting claims about this.)

Also, other than the Evaporate spell, do any of the "junk" items have any potential use? (I guess random uselessness could theoretically summon butterflies at an opportune time, but that's about it ... right?)

Useless items don't help prevent destruction of good ones. Trust us to avoid such blunders :)
Some of the junk items have use: Evaporate for potions, as you mention. Random uselessness can help you get Spellcasting. The Cursing scrolls are used by Ashenzari worshipers. The scrolls of paper has been removed, by the way.

You can also use scrolls of curse for learning spellcasting. Recommend you remove whatever it curses before doing it though unless you're swimming in scrolls of remove curse.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Random uselessness in desperation can sometimes yield a summon butterflies effect.

On CDO, the list of unidentified items still shows scrolls of old paper. These are the same, right?

Dpeg means in trunk, the current 'in-development' codebase.

They're still included in the latest stable release (0.7.2) which is I believe what CDO is running.

Random uselessness (aka scroll of summon butterflies) is usually the best escape option for most characters. Scroll of blink is good for victory dancing to train spellcasting. Carry around those scrolls of acquirement, as having them in your inventory increases your resistance to mottled dragons' sticky flame. Evaporate potion of experience (side note- this should create a fire storm or something... does it? (Never mind.. tried it in wiz mode :( )).

None of your intentionally bad advice is clever enough to be funny.

CDO runs trunk. CAO runs the stable version. I think the list of unidentified items still list scroll of paper for save compatibility reasons. It will be removed when 0.8 goes final.
