Yeah, if going gets too tough in D it's time to hit the easy lair branches and clear them from 1-4 and/or do vaults 1-4. Personally, I like to do snake/spider and swamp/shoals 1-4 before touching vaults nowdays unless I get some kind unique meeting with dangerous participants in like snake:1 or something.

Okay, So I hit XL 18, and am at 23.1 Fighting, 15 Shield (Large Eleven Shield and like 16 Armour) Focused on fighting and Armour and probably gonna start dodging. Would I be ready to hit the vaults, or should I go deeper in the main dungeon?

You need 25 shields for a large shield so you could just switch to a normal one so it wouldn't slow down your attacks you'll have a bit less SH but it's not critical. Also, vanilla gloves would be better than bracers of archery for you as they decreasy your accuracy of melee attacks. Also enchanting that vamp whip might be a good idea and you can start by using those two scrolls. What use do you have for that great sword and that dagger, btw?..

Honestly, I had that dagger at the start and never got rid of it, the swords I don't know, just in case. I'll do that with the vampire whip, what weapons should I keep, and which can I drop off? I thought I needed 15 for SH, so I'll just raise it. Also, what branch do I do now, I've not been this far before and don't know what to do...

Actually I cleared out all of Vaults:1-4 and have now done the shoals 5 (easy!) and spiders 5 (easy!) and should I try to do the vaults 5 now and get the third rune? Screw it, I did it, got the rune on my third big square, totally worth it. have all three now :) now what????

If you have rCorr somewhere you could do slimes, too. Just wear something with rC for azure jellies just in case. Both slimes and V:5 are more dangerous than first two lair branches, of course. The abbysal rune is not so hard to get, too, I think.

I have the amulet of resist corrosion, and a ring of protection from cold, which should work? I'm guessing I should take off the ring of slaying, and use the cold protection, and also wear the amulet.

EDIT: Yup, Did that, so have four runes now :D

yep, at some point jellies are quite easy if you have rCorr. The abyssal rune(if you want it) spawns on 3-5 levels, btw, but just staying on 3 until it spawns is the safest way.

I went for the abyssal rune, and turned out to be a mistake, got to floor 2, and eventually just mutated and died.. Note to self, don't go there again.... Really Good Game.

Yes, get a 3-rune game under your belt before going extended. Zot will have enemies you haven't seen before, when you do eventually get there, be careful and read the description of every creature.

Read the Wiki if you must, but only for simply factual material ("This list of creatures generate on Zot.") Disregard everything that is not strictly factual. Occasionally something on the Wiki will be outdated a bit, but for the most part the strictly factual stuff on it is accurate, and it presents the information in a form that tends to be more useful if you don't have a question about something very specific (in which case use the Knowledge Bots). So use the Knowledge Bots for that type of thing, and if you need elaboration about anything, ask on this forum. As you can see you get lots of quick responses, and people are actually beholden by others (rather than spared by complete anonymity) to give you good advice.

When it comes to advice on the wiki (as opposed to facts), "dubious" is an understatement. There are things on the Wiki presented as "good advice" that will straight-up get your character killed. Some of the advice is good, of course, because there are plenty of people who contribute to the wiki who know what they are talking about. Unfortunately the only way to know which advice is good and which is bad is if you already are an experienced player, in which case you don't need the advice anyway, so.....

I know, and it is a huge undertaking. Didn't mean it as a slight to you and what you are trying to do.

I'm working on a project right now that's keeping me pretty busy, but if you PM me, we can get in contact over email, and sometime next week I can maybe try to point out some of the stuff that is really outrageous (some of which seems it might have actually been put on there as trolling by someone).

I recall on the Abyssal Knight information page, for instance, it suggests using corruption in a labyrinth, which will easily kill a character, and even if it doesn't, provides no benefit whatsoever. (As if labyrinths need to be "tricked" through usage of god abilities, in the first place.....)

(In case it isn't clear to people who haven't worshiped Lugonu: Corruption spawns a bunch of neutral demons around you. The best way to use this is in an open area, so the demons disperse and you can slip away while they run amok against your enemies. It is wasted when there aren't a lot of enemies around, for one thing, but it is also very very dangerous to use it in cramped quarters, because the demons will all be piled in on top of you. You can use it in cramped quarters if you teleport immediately, but you never want to teleport in a labyrinth. So it is actually worse than useless, and indeed extremely dangerous, to use corruption in a labyrinth.)

I have only provided information, so I hope you don't blame me :) I consider abyssal rune quite easy by the time I'm ready to get it and I think your character was ok, probably not enough experience with the game, I guess.

My first win was with 15 runes and 2 zigs, though. :roll: I like to brag about it.
As for zot realm, don't go there without rF++ or better. And zot:5 is a place that is almost never easy to clear.

Yes, books is the only spell source unless you are with Vehumet, Sif Muna or Kiku. Actually the last two gods grant books too.

That is flipping tragic. Pearl dragon armour is excellent stuff in general; I'd be cautious slapping it on a spriggan without serious strength boosts, but it's still one of the best armours in the game.

Evocations are completely unaffected by your armour or your intelligence, making them an excellent way to cheat out magical effects from big, clumsy dudes wearing massive armour.
