How find a lost object?

I've dropped somewhere a staff of wizardry which my char needs now - the problem some monster must have taken it and I must have stepped on the title where I've left it, during autotravel - therefore, ctrl-f doesn't show any staff of wiz in the dungeon.

I could easily re-explore the level to catch and slain the little thief, but the problem is I don't remember where I dropped the staff - is any way to recover this information?

Re: How find a lost object?

I dont think it matters whether or not you have stepped on the tile, ctrl-f simply shows everything on the ground that you have seen. (It will show for example all the 'runed' or 'glowing' objects that monsters have dropped, even after you have burnt their corpses to okawaru.)

If a monster picked it up, I think you have to search the level. Try casting loud spells or walking around and shouting a lot. Maybe you will find the goblin before an OOD titan pops in and smashes your head with a rock.

The problem is I don't remember the level, and ctrl-f doesn't show things aren't seen - namely, things on titles you stepped on after some monster had stolen them.

At least wizardry is fairly common, and you can replace it entirely by boosting skills.

I don't think there is a way. In an offline game you could maybe look at the lst file, but I'm not really sure what's in there, just that it has a lot of item information.

yeah, check morgue txt file. If you bought something, it will say. If not you might get a clue or a flashback.

Yes, that was pretty much the problem. The game has been won but now I don't know if it's the case of opening a ticket on Mantis - I mean, totally losing the track of an object in the game seems pretty bad for a search function...

This is bordering on feature request, but could still be considered a bug. You might as well post it on mantis and see if anyone does something about it. It's not like all bugs get fixed. :P

Or perhaps this situation gives more fuel to the monsters-shouldn't-pick-up-items fire? Especially something as completely useless to them as wizardry.

It might have been eaten by a jelly, too.

Ctrl+F is not very helpful sometimes. https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=7529

Re: How find a lost object?

I have a related problem.
I dropped a "highlevel book" on a tile with some junk, like a whip or something. Later, I returned to the place by searching for it, and it was not there, but the junk still was. What could happen? Can monsters pick up books? Could a jelly eat it and spare other "edible" objects?

I know it sounds stupid, but is there any book laying on that square?
Maybe called Annihilations or Necronomicon?
Just checking, I made that mistake once, "Where is the damn Highlevel book!?" before facepalming.

No, obviously not. Plus I don't have the skill to identify any highlevel book, and also I'm quite certain they only identify after you pick them up again with skills, at least in my version (0.13, build ~3000).
