What would you buy?

I'm done with Orc:4, and I only have enough money to buy one of these things. I have only one enchant armor scroll in my stash so far.

Ring of Protection +6 (Leaving enough money to grab an amulet of conservation as well)
OR
Pearl Dragon Armor

Wearing a +0 Orcish Plate now, no runed plate in Orc unfortunately. So which would you buy, or neither? Dump below.

Re: What would you buy?

Up to you on the ring of protection, but personally I would scoop up the amulet of conservation since those are sometimes almost impossible to find.
You can always travel back to the shop to pick up the PDA if you really want it.

Re: What would you buy?

Not what you are asking, but I would consider getting that great weapon you have to min delay (it's 26 Axes for an executioner's axe) before getting more Armour and Fighting.

ring and amulet. you will end up with higher ac for the moment than if you switch out to the pearl armor, plus you will likely run into a runed plate eventually.

Re: What would you buy?

I'd see what Plate Armor was dropped by the Orcs before pulling the trigger on a PDA... Especially with Trog. 3 EVP is the bee's knees for high AC if you want to cast, but you can probably find a better brand than rN+ just floating around on some Plate.

Re: What would you buy?

I would take the PDA. You have been pumping dexterity, and you're hitting the point where you're going to want to invest in dodging soon enough. PDA is much better than plate armour for an AC + EV strategy.

Also, you're going to find enough gold for the ring and amulet eventually. They will still be there if you haven't found any better options, but it is going to be hard to outclass PDA.

You are going to find enough gold for the PDA eventually (if he even wants it). I don't think the "soon enough" is that soon at all, because the next thing on this character that I would do before even thinking anything dodging related, is to get axes to min delay for that sweet sweet min delay vampiric exec axe swinging. He still hast 5,8 of pretty expensive skill levels left to go. Plate armour with fire resistance (assuming he finds one) may very well be better for this character anyways!

@ OP. Look at it this way: You have a pretty useless amulet and only situationally useful ring (poison res). To replace them, you can buy a very good ring and a decent amulet (on amulet standards, amulets are not very good except faith on many characters). So I would go for the jewellery. You are not casting spells with Trog which greatly diminishes the usefulness of PDA's better encumbarance rating and the resistance is not good compared to fire res, for example.

Re: What would you buy?

PDA is good even with Trog, because not getting hit is really nice. But if you don't have a lot of enchant scrolls there's not much reason to get it right now. If the PDA is enchanted, buy it, if it's not just get the jewelry and probably buy the PDA later.

Re: What would you buy?

I would buy amulet of conservation. It will save many valuable items in the long run and it's much easier to play when you know you cannot die because of scroll of blinking in inventory.

I don't think anyone said that PDA wasn't good. However, the difference in EV would be 1-5 depending on future skill training and future attribute (st vs dex) raises (2 for the current situation if I my quick check holds up). So I'm not sure I would always choose the PDA over (the now hypothetical) plate armour of fire res in circumstances like this. Sure you can swap rings but that +6 protection and +7 slaying would also help against that fire giant...

(BTW I assumed on my previous post that the PDA unchanted or the enchantment level is not known)

Re: What would you buy?

The only bad thing about a ring of slaying +7dam and a ring of protection +6ac is that he isn't an octopode. :D

Re: What would you buy?

I think slaying is overestimated for this character. He uses Executioner's Axe and would benefit more from a ring of rF+/rC+.
Perhaps I would use +7,0 ring of slaying instead of current 0, +7 :)

Re: What would you buy?

I would without question buy the ac ring and the amulet.

Although it is rare, the PDA does exactly what it says it does when you examine it. To me, that is not really better than a +1 or +2 orcish plate on this character right now. And the ring alone is like you suddenly have +6 orcish plate.

Re: What would you buy?

Definitely the ring, for all the reasons that have been given. The PDA gives you very little up-front benefit, and by the time it might pay off to switch you'll have enough gold to get it.

Re: What would you buy?

Thanks for the help, I bought the ring and amulet. Now I'm considerably farther and have more than enough money to buy the PDA. Unfortunately I've only got about 5 enchant armor scrolls. I've also got a Gold Dragon hide now, and am wearing a +9 artefact plate armor in the mean time while I collect scrolls. Obviously I may end up staying in the artefact plate for the remainder, but if I get some more scrolls... what would the ideal armor be? GDA on resistances alone?

Re: What would you buy?

I think if you are short on resistances, GDA is good, because you don't cast spells. If you plan to switch to another god and do pan, hells and such, then PDA could be better, definitely better than GDA and it's terrible encumberance rating. Also 5 scrolls is something already, +5 prevents corrosion and enchantment doesn't get modified my the armour skill, IIRC.

Re: What would you buy?

Don't forget you can enchant your other armour. It's unlikely you have all randarts or +2 items in cloak/boots/gloves/head slots

Re: What would you buy?

This might be late but GDA is terrible and you likely have any source of rC+ you can just swap on in case of need so resistances are definitely not a problem, so get and enchant the PDA.
