Help with TrBe

Hey guys,

Currently getting into a decent TrBe game. My last one died horribly to a hydra that I just could not escape from.

My question is, I know I cannot attack hydras. Someone suggested "large rocks" as a way of dealing with them. I haven't found any so far. What are my other options? I seem to be picking up lots of weapons, including a god given staff that is no doubt quite powerful, but I am specced for unarmed combat; so havent used any weapons at all. I throw stones at things (to damage them a little as they close to melee range) but I have all my training going into UC at the moment.

Whats the consensus about how to deal with hydrae? Wand them down? Polymorph them into something else? Use a bow and arrow? Some kind of other weapon (Even though I have no skill in that weapon)

Any suggestions welcome, I want to finish lair at some point soon and I don't think I can do that till I can deal with Hydra.

Final couple of questions...

Is it worth using enchant weapon scrolls on my claws? does it have any effect?
Whats the deal with scrolls of identify? Sometimes I seem to be able to identify 5-6 different potions, sometimes only one. Can someone explain please?

If you can find some kind of bladed weapon of flame you can swap to it to deal with Hydras, even with low skill each blow should chop off a head making them increasingly useless. Failing that, a mace if you NEED to kill one is much better then your claws, especially if you bring their health down or incapacitate them with wands beforehand.

Enchant Weapon has no effect on your claws as far as I remember. Chuck them or use them on whatever anti-hydra weapon you choose.
Identify scrolls can identify 1-3 items. It's entirely a matter of luck how many identifys any given scroll will give you so don't worry about it.

I'll train maces and flails to about 5, then use a morningstar, giant spiked club, or whip of electricity depending on what I've found. If you get good armour, the individual hits from the hydra aren't enough to damage you and you can take them apart with claws. But you need good armour.

Brothers In Arms is an option for hydras, as is walking away as long as they aren't on water. They swim faster than you walk, but they walk the same speed.

I've got a whip of electricity. Why that, rathar than my god given weapon, or the quarterstaff of chaos, for example (it seems to have good stats)

Trolls deal with hydrae the same way just about everyone else does, except that you probably don't use conjurations or summoning. That still leaves:

* God abilities
* Wands / evokables
* Javelins or large stones
* Flaming bladed weapons
* Weapon swap to something blunt

Keep in mind that if the hydra is lowish on life and you've still got most of your life, it's easy to just claw it down anyway. You should be dealing considerably more damage than it regenerates by regrowing heads, meaning it'll go down before it gets enough additional heads to become frightening.

Personally, I don't like the weapon swap option, since I find that the other options are usually more than good enough, and they don't require wasting XP.

I never actually tried clawing one down to be honest. Maybe I'll zap it with my wand of fire a few times first. Its annoying that a bow is considered a weapon (i.e that you have to unwield it to hit things)

Is there any way to "shoot" things as they approach and then go straight into melee, without wasting turns unwielding your weapon? Aside from straight throwing?

You can't go straight into melee without unwielding (trying to hit them *with* the bow is not recommended), but changing weapons only takes a half a turn, and there's no penalty for just continuing to fire the bow in melee range.

Using a bow is hilariously ineffective, to the point where I struggle to kill a single kobold with one.

Im coming to the point where my inventory is getting full (51/52 slots, i'm having to drop stuff to pick things up)

Whats my choices? Can I get more slots?

People talk of stashing things. If I do that, is there an easy way to mark where i've stashed it? Wheres the best place to stash it? Do creatures take from your stash? If so, how do i protect it?

Lastly, I'm sure i'm keeping far too much stuff in my inventory, but im unsure what to drop.

im thinking of ditching the uncursed bow and all of the arrows as a ranged weapon in favour of the blowgun, seeing as I have a -4 aptitude for bows and a -1 aptitude for throwing (which blowguns fall under)

Is this a sensible enough choice?

Moving on from that, I want to keep the flail of crushing (For Hydras, its the best non slicing weapon I have I think) and I should also keep the anti-mage quick blade (Im guessing for heavy magic users) and the quarterstaff of holy wrath for the undead.

Is it really a case of keeping/stashing this many weapons, or am I being overly cautious and should I just claw everything to death except hydras?

Finally, my skill tree looks like this... Is this ok? (With regard to what Im training now my UC is about level 16 or so) and also, why am I getting +4 aptitude to staves and slings?

SOmething invisible is hitting me, and I've no idea what. Up until now, anything hitting me has become visible after 5-6 moves, this does not seem to be, and its faster than me, so even running flat out im losing HP.

Im at half HP right now. What the f do I do?!

Sounds like an unseen horror, they start to show up around D:10ish. Basically they are like a hard hitting invisible bat so it is hard to guess where they are going to be, if I don't have see invis I usually just try to get off the level, into a hallway, and/or use a fog scroll to help find them.
If you search the advice forum for 'unseen horror' I know there was at least one recent thread on dealing with them.

Is it viable to just blindly swing at it? I think its to the left of me, and I take it that it cannot get past me. CTRL + left Direction until it dies?

I looked up the thread about dealing with them, theres lots of good tips there - the only one that really applies to me is using my scroll of fog. However, If i can just kill it without wasting a scroll I will!

The best way to deal with hydras is whatever hydra dealing method your character was able to actually find. You aren't guarenteed to find any of them unless your background starts with it, and trolls certainly don't. Berserkers, however, do - brothers in arms. High piety cost, and you don't want to use it often, but it could be an option. I previously recommended large rocks because they are one of the easiest ones to force to spawn - you may not find them by lair if your lair is on an early floor, but if you go down to d:12 or so you're just about certain to find them on a cyclops or giant. Flaming blades are great but you're unlikely to find one early on. If you do, great. Everyone will probably have some attack wands, and these are great for softening them up, but your charges will deplete quickly.

Unseen horrors you want to either fog in a corridor, blindly attack in a corridor, or get to a different floor and abandon the mob there. It can be tricky to get them to take stairs though, as they're often not next to you on your turn. If you are in a corridor where they can't move past you, and you know what side of you they are on, you can force attack (control + direction) and hit them on the turns they happen to be next to you. This may take a while. Make sure you have the raw power to survive being hit for a while. Rings of see invis are of course the obvious solution.

You can leave an annotation on the level (press !, if the annotation begins with ! it will prompt you before entering that level), but generally people just use search (control + F) to type in what item they are looking for, and crawl will give you back a list of where all of those items are, and you can auto travel to them.

I still prefer to have a centralized stash because I find it annoying to search for each item and travel to 3 different places when I need to restock. I'd rather just go to one place and have all my things there. This may take more trips to drop things off at that one location though, try both and see what you like. Item destruction may be getting removed in the near future, although it's still around for now.

You can also set a "waypoint" at a location with Control-W (you can pick a number 0-9 for your stash)
then you can travel back to that point with Control-G, then hit that number (Will auto-travel to that point)
(Control-G is also a great way to travel to a different branch or level you've been to before)

Another viable method is to use control-F to find what it is you need to travel back and get, and then select it from the list, this makes it so you don't need one centralized repository for everything and can kind of just leave things generally where you find them.

Noticed a centaur, moved closer, noticed a warrior and four more centaurs. All still very far away, but i realise how powerful centaurs are, so i started to run.

4-5 moves in the opposite direction to the centaurs later and I'm dead. I thought i was out of range of anything they could do, obviously not. WIll teach me to check before pressing buttons!

If you can see a centaur, it can see you and can hit you with an arrow. They're also faster than you, so in addition to moving to keep up while you run away, they can continue to pepper you with arrows.

Usually when you see a centaur your first step should be away from it. Duck around a corner and make it come to you.

Then possibly shout to get it to come to your hopefully safe place if it's wandering and didn't notice you before.

Or just throw a dart or stone, it will attract less attention from other monsters.
